📣 There was some refreshing real talk at HackSummit NYC yesterday on "blended finance", which has been touted as key to driving increased capital flows into climate adaptation. A top-tier panel including Andrew Lala, Timothy Rann, and Esther Pan Sloane (moderated by Helena Wasserman) made clear the naive belief that public, first-loss capital will unlock billions of private sector cash for climate doesn't withstand contact with reality. 💬 Here's what Esther had to say: "There's an expectation in the multilateral system, and almost like a religious belief, that government money will attract private sector capital automatically ... and I wonder if the public understanding of that is wrong, because it seems like private sector capital is very resistant to moving to these markets." She cited a real example of a UN-backed blended finance fund that successfully raised $50mn from governments....but couldn't raise a dime from private investors. Ouch! I've been entranced by reports from CPI, Convergence, et al on the possibilities of blended capital....time I re-evaluated my priors. #climatefinance #blendedfinance #adaptation #resilience #climaterisk
