At a panel event in our London studio, IDEO CEO Derek Robson shared a snippet from a conversation he had with the former CEO of a major manufacturer. This executive told Derek, "I've spent the last month with different CEOs of different companies... and all they talk about is AI. None of them know what it is, but they're all talking about it." This highlights a common challenge: CEOs recognize the importance of #AI but often lack a clear understanding of how to implement it effectively. At IDEO, we believe #HumanCenteredDesign can play a crucial role in helping shape #BusinessStrategy. By implementing AI thoughtfully and strategically, companies can leverage its potential to enhance creativity, drive innovation, and create impactful solutions.

A clear purpose is powerful, but without a #strategy, it’s just an idea. https://lnkd.in/dRUMm2G4 To turn purpose into action, you need a strategy that guides daily decisions and aligns your team for long-term success. Here are 3 tips to align strategy with purpose: 🔸Co-create with stakeholders: Engage your team early to gather insights and build buy-in. 🔸Evaluate past choices: Reflect on past decisions to identify gaps or opportunities for alignment with your new purpose. 🔸Visualize future scenarios: Test different strategies by imagining potential outcomes to clarify the best path forward.

"When design hits, it HITS." Thank you for advocating for #HumanCenteredDesign and for telling this story so beautifully!
I have a weird confession to make… when I started working at IDEO, I was skeptical about the value of design. 😬 Don't get me wrong—I cared deeply about design. As a lifelong Apple fan, I always tried to live up to their high standards of user experience when I was designing my own products. And IDEO is one of the top design firms in the world, so I knew what I was getting into. 😅 But I had been an indie app developer, used to working quickly on a shoestring. The idea of spending 12 weeks, hundreds of thousands of dollars, traveling to three cities with a team of four people—all to research, prototype and design ONE product? 💀 It seemed excessive. Extravagant. Certainly impossible to justify financially. 💸 In my mind, there were design patterns for everything—just follow best practices, and it would be clear for users. Right? …right? Almost immediately, I learned three things: 1️⃣ Designers are not the judges of good design; customers are. Every time I thought I nailed a design (totally clear! very intuitive!) the users just shredded it. Luckily, it wasn't just me—in a decade at IDEO, I never saw a design team nail it the first time (though we’d always get there after a few iterations). 2️⃣ "Design" is SO much more than I realized. I knew about visual design and user experience, but IDEO's human-centered design (HCD) process often defined (or redefined) the fundamental elements of the product/service. Together, 1 & 2 showed me that HCD was deep work that had real value to the user—but what about the business? It wasn't long before I learned: 3️⃣ When design hits, it HITS. In the blog post linked below, I describe a 5 week design sprint (not mine) that directly resulted in $4B of new business for a client. Not every design project has an ROI that extreme. But when I saw how asymmetric the return on design could be—and learned what some of our clients were spending on advertising per month—it started to seem irresponsible NOT to invest in designing the future of the business. 👉 Nathan Tower and I are excited apply what we've learned to a single business. In today’s world, the #environment challenges we face—from biodiversity collapse to #climate injustice—are no longer distant threats, they’re here and now. https://lnkd.in/gKfCAEgA But in some boardrooms across the globe, responses remain painfully predictable: another strategy, another net-zero pledge, targets set for decades down the line. Nazlican Goksu, IDEO Design Director, shares what she sees as the top three critical traps holding organizations back from meaningful change: 🌍Innovation Theater – Sustainability initiatives that look good but don’t address the root causes of harm. 🌍Delegation Delusion – Sustainability cannot be delegated to a single department; it must be embedded at every level of the business. 🌍The Quarterly Trap – The tension between short-term financial targets and long-term #sustainability goals is keeping many companies stuck in place. But change is happening. Leaders like those at Allbirds, CVS Health, and Rewiring America are embracing discomfort, reinventing their business models, and creating products that are better for the planet and the bottom line. These leaders are investing in the future, not waiting for it to arrive. At IDEO, we’re working alongside the brave leaders shaping the future of business. If you’re ready to step up and make meaningful change, we’d love to help you bring your vision to life.

📍 Frisco, Texas How do you design a public park to serve the diverse needs of an entire community? Together, the City of Frisco and IDEO worked directly with residents to create an intergenerational, collective vision of what a park can be, and how it can serve their needs now, and for generations to come. Community members shared a vision of “Grand Park” as a unifying, shared space, a backdrop where many families can form foundational memories in Frisco.
