Are you considering bringing your team back into the office full time? Here's an interesting take from Brian Elliott on MIT Sloan Management Review on ways Return to Office (RTO) doesn't actually solve the problems senior management is seeking to solve and the negative unintended consequences of implementing RTO.

This billboard got worldwide attention — but here’s the best part that everyone missed: It was totally fake. This is a lesson in zero-cost marketing — and the power of VIRALITY over REALITY. So let’s back up… In 2012, Miele (and agency McCann) had a crazy idea: A highway tunnel can look like a vacuum cleaner, sucking up cars! Could they build it for real? Maybe. But it would have been expensive and complex — and anyway, the real payoff would have been VIDEO of it. So... why not just make the video? They edited footage of a Serbian highway, then released it to worldwide attention. Here’s the thing — big budgets don’t buy better ideas. No matter your budget, ask yourself: “How can I tell a story that engages people?” That’s all that matters. This redesign sent sales soaring and led to an acquisition — and the reason will make you rethink your whole business. This is Hiball Energy, which launched in 2005 as a premium energy drink. The founders wanted to differentiate Hiball from other energy drinks, which are in tall cans. So they used a glass bottle. They loved this bottle. It made them different! But… the product wasn’t selling. So Hiball took a risk: It repackaged in a (gasp!) tall can. Then things EXPLODED. By 2017, they did $40M in annual sales — and were acquired by AB InBev. This was a classic business problem: The founders THOUGHT they knew what made them special. But they didn’t ACTUALLY know if it made them special. Step back and ask yourself: “What’s my greatest value proposition?” Then ask: “Am I doing everything I can to help people understand that?” Hiball’s value prop was the beverage itself, made with no sugar or sweeteners. The value was NOT a fancy bottle. When you let go of what’s not important, you can double down on what is. That’s success. This pizza shop stunt went ultra-viral — because it followed the most important rule of marketing giveaways: Don’t just give people SOMETHING. Give them something TO REMEMBER. This came from Glide Pizza in Atlanta. They sent a guy out in yellow spandex and a QR code, offering free pizza… but he made it impossible to scan. So people chased him. Took photos. Posted to social. It became A WHOLE THING. Now imagine if Glide Pizza just gave out pizza instead. People would have been briefly happy… but would they have talked about it? Shared it? Remembered it? Nope. You’re never just selling a product. You’re always selling an experience. And you don’t need a big budget to do it.
