Kiva is on a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive.
About us
Kiva (www.kiva.org) expands financial access to help underserved communities thrive. An international non-profit, we serve the financially excluded, especially underbanked women, refugees and communities impacted by forced displacement, climate-vulnerable people and systemically marginalized communities in the United States. By connecting people through crowdfunded loans, Kiva puts the power of financial inclusion in all our hands. Since 2005, the Kiva community has raised over $2 billion in loans, reaching over 5 million people in 84 countries. Kiva’s team is made up of 100+ employees and 450+ volunteers across the world, with offices in San Francisco, Nairobi, Bangkok, and Bogotá.

What is climate adaptation? While reducing greenhouse gas emissions can help slow the effects of climate change, strategies are needed to help people who are already impacted by climate change. Climate adaptation is learning how to live with the effects of climate change through a set of strategies that protect people’s livelihoods, homes, and food supplies. It requires a long-term vision for the future that means changing the way we grow food, build our homes, and modify our lives to better adapt to a new environment. What are some climate adaptation strategies? The United Nations Committee on Climate Change outlined a framework that includes: • Ecosystem-based adaptation: Implementing projects that use existing biodiversity and ecosystem services • Knowledge, analysis, and networking: Utilizing global networks to share information and resources between countries • Access to adaptation finance: Supporting governments and partners in obtaining funding for climate responses and innovation …. and more. Kiva is dedicated to expanding financial inclusion for underserved communities, including those impacted by climate change. Comment below with questions about financial inclusion and climate change.

“Helping girls to stay in school, helping them to achieve what they want in life, that is my favorite part." Lindiwe runs three successful businesses in her community. But her true passion — mentoring and training other local women — is what drives her success. She wants to employ other women and be a role model who shows them what is possible when they persevere. Through her Kiva loan, Lindiwe has not only seen her business succeed, she has also seen a change in how she feels about herself and her standing in her community. We won a Gold medal from The Anthem Awards for our work with Tripadvisor! For #GivingTuesday2023, Tripadvisor matched Kiva loans to refugees, dollar-for-dollar, inspiring 2,200 Tripadvisor customers and Kiva lenders to support over 1,000 refugees with $260,000 in loan capital. These loans help refugees regain stability and restore their economic independence. How can you support refugee entrepreneurs when you travel? We have a call-to-action from Kiva team member Louisa Daly:

A new report by impact measurement company 60 Decibels analyzes how Kiva is addressing economic inequality in the U.S.: At Kiva, we know that the U.S., despite being the world’s largest economy by GDP, is home to millions of people considered financially excluded. Approximately 26 million adults in the U.S. (nearly 10%) are “credit invisible”, meaning they do not have enough credit history to produce a credit score. 1 in 4 U.S. adults are underbanked, meaning they have limited access to financial services. With our 0%-interest, zero-fee, no-collateral, no-minimum-credit-score, socially underwritten loans, we’re not only rethinking creditworthiness, but we’re also helping fill the gap created by deep-rooted economic inequality.
