OTK Media's Mad Mushroom is piloting its creator-led publishing strategy with Lightfox Games' Rumble Club. The cross-platform physics brawler will launch on PC and mobile on April 23.
The title takes notes from a variety of genres, including battle royales and platform fighters. Players will fight with their fists and goofy gadgets to knock opponents into the goo below.
Rumble Club is the highest profile launch to-date from a creator-led game publisher. It will serve as the first major case study to determine how viable this new publishing model is. Discoverability is harder than ever before and vertically integrating creators helps align incentives and extend the value of marketing spend.
Lightfox and Mad Mushroom are a natural fit, with both companies looking to make games that are as fun to watch as they are to play. The physics-based combat mechanics help make the viewing experience intuitive. And thanks to advice from OTK creators, Rumble Club has plenty of features to make streaming and content creation seamless.
I sat down with Mike Silbowitz, MBA, Ryan Hanft-Murphy, and Jordan Arnold at #GDC to learn more about the genesis of the deal. Rumble Club began development in January 2023 and will launch just 16 months later. Even crazier -- Mad Mushroom and Lightfox met at an event in December 2023 hosted by the developer's led investor 1AM Gaming. The teams closed the publishing deal shortly thereafter.
I also got a chance to play Rumble Club too! The variety of gameplay modes, maps and colorful chaotic combat hooked me immediately. It's a great pick up for players craving a tongue-in-cheek semi-competitive game, especially if you play with friends.
Rumble Club launches with plenty to prove on April 23, 2024, launching on PC and mobile. Eager fans can also play test the game starting today March 21 through March 28 on Steam Early Access.
