To Nourish and Engage Seniors in Yolo County
About us
At Meals On Wheels Yolo County, we are more than a meal delivery service; we are a lifeline for seniors throughout our community. Our mission is to ensure that every elderly resident receives not only nutritious meals but also moments of connection and care, enhancing their quality of life and fostering their independence and dignity. Each Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, our dedicated team of volunteers and staff prepares and delivers balanced meals, carefully tailored to meet the dietary needs of older adults. We use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that reflect the rich agricultural heritage of Yolo County. For many seniors, our visits are crucial social interactions that combat loneliness and isolation, bringing warmth and companionship into their lives. Beyond meal delivery, we offer a range of supportive services. These include safety checks, referrals to other community resources, and wellness programs designed to promote overall health and well-being. By addressing the holistic needs of our seniors, we help them age gracefully in the comfort of their own homes. Our heart lies in our volunteers—community members who generously donate their time and energy to make a difference. Whether delivering meals, assisting in the kitchen, or providing administrative support, our volunteers embody the spirit of kindness and neighborly care. We thrive on the support of donors and partners who share our commitment to making a tangible impact. Their contributions ensure the sustainability of our vital service, enabling us to reach more seniors and adapt to the growing needs of the aging population. At Meals On Wheels Yolo County, we create a network of care that nourishes the body and soul, ensuring no senior is forgotten and every meal is a testament to community solidarity. Join us in supporting our seniors, honoring their contributions, and enriching their lives one meal at a time. Together, we can make a difference.

This week marked Meals on Wheels Yolo County County's first-ever meal deliveries to migrant centers in the county, and we are grateful for our impactful partnership with Yolo County Housing Authority (YCH) that made it possible. Now through October when the season ends, senior residents of both the Madison and Davis Migrants Centers (operated by YCH) can count upon weekly deliveries of five nutritious, freshly-prepared, frozen meals, some featuring the very local foods that they and their families work to harvest. YCH Housing Specialist Maria Pena shares how deeply meaningful this is to her and to the senior migrant center residents: "Hard workers, like my father who was a farm worker, often put in long hours. These families are my roots, and I consider them my family. They come home exhausted with little time or energy to cook and share with their loved ones. Meals on Wheels Yolo County is a huge help, easing their worries about the next meal and benefiting them economically by saving them money." A recent food security survey by Yolo Food Bank illuminated the ironic instability of dependable food access for farmworkers as the most challenging in the county. When paired with the special hurdles seniors in any part of Yolo County often face connecting with healthy meals regularly, the crisis is clear. MOW Yolo is honored to now nourish these aging adults as part of our #eatwellagewell commitment to equity. Please consider joining us at www.mowyolo.org to support these hardworking individuals and their families, who are the backbone of our local economy! And, if you or a friend or loved one is a migrant center resident or living elsewhere in rural or urban Yolo County and could benefit from MOW Yolo services, please reach out at welcome@mowyolo.org or 530-662-7035.

What an inspiring celebration of the Big Day of Giving last week, accepting a $2,000 grant from West Sacramento Foundation at their event honoring all 2024 grant recipients and offering the opportunity to thank their generous all-volunteer Board personally! Meals on Wheels Yolo County Board member Tammy Linker (left) of West Sacramento and Donor Experience Officer Hollie Malamud (right) offered their deep gratitude 🫶. MOW Yolo will use these funds to bring #CafeYolo Social Dining to aging adults in West Sacramento again by this summer, so important to alleviating loneliness and supporting food security amongst often isolated seniors in the community. Look for an announcement with more details soon! Encouraged to join the West Sacramento Foundation in supporting MOW Yolo, or in need of senior nutrition and engagement services for yourself or a loved one? More seniors will #EatWellAgeWell thanks to your #BDOG2024 Big Day of Giving generosity, Yolo County…the Meals on Wheels Yolo County Board, staff, and meal recipients deeply THANK YOU! In the words of our Executive Director Joy Cohan: "In a time of increasing discord in our world, hot meals and social contact for vulnerable seniors are priorities upon which we all can agree. MOW Yolo is honored to carry out this mission, providing safety for aging adults, and donor confidence that their investments make human lives better in Yolo County — our own, sweet corner of the world. I am deeply grateful for these gifts!”

On a busy Wednesday last week, MOW Yolo shared time in our Woodland meal production facility with honored guests! - Kayla Rodriguez, Government Affairs and Community Relations Manager – Inland Region for Recology, posed with the MOW Yolo team and one of our new temperature-controlled vehicles. This followed an illuminating conversation about the partnership potential to ensure that more seniors' meal trays are recycled, and the possible introduction of compostable options! Kayla is second from left, joined by, left-to-right, MOW Yolo Food Services Manager Michele Long, Executive Director Joy Cohan, Donor Experience Officer Hollie Malamud, Food Services Manager Carissa Brown, and Food Services Director Zea Davis. - Davis City Social Services Commissioner Justine Villanueva ( not pictured) assisted food services staff to seal a meal for delivery to a local senior using the Oliver Meal Packaging machine. Justine's visit was prompted by a Community Development Block Grant awarded to MOW Yolo this fiscal year by Davis City to partially offset expenses to nourish vulnerable seniors in the community. - Yolo County Administrator Gerardo Pinedo and Supervisor Angel Barajas listened intently as MOW Yolo Food Services Director Zea Davis described routines and requirements related to safe and sanitary operations of our institutional meal production facilities. The officials were accompanied by other county staff members (such as David Moreno, deputy to Supervisor Mary Vixie Sandy) on a quest to learn more about how a potential program to assist street vendors with licensing and permitting for appropriate food handling might take form in collaboration with MOW Yolo. Are YOU interested to see and experience the heart of MOW Yolo first-hand, as well? Join us for a tour of our Woodland or Winters meal production facilities! Reach out to Hollie at hollie@mowyolo.org or 530-662-7035 to schedule, or visit us anytime to partner, donate, volunteer, or connect with meals for yourself or a senior you care about at www.mowyolo.org #eatwellagewell #mowyolo #woodlandca #volunteer #donate #visit

"You're helping to keep me alive." Could there be more poignant words uttered by a local, struggling senior? These words from seniors on his #WestSacramento meal delivery route inspire Davisite Mitchell Heller, a recent retiree, as he enters his second year as a weekly Meals on Wheels Yolo County volunteer meal delivery driver, providing nutritious meals and social contact to food insecure seniors in this still underserved community. In this second week of #VolunteerAppreciationMonth, we honor his commitment! "I see seniors in trailer parks, motels and transitional housing, independent living retirement communities, and traditional residences. There was an urgent need for my volunteer time in West Sacramento, and it's only a 15 minute drive from my home in South Davis. I'm getting to know communities very different than mine, but so close by. We live in silos and often don’t have a good perspective on what the rest of the world looks like and a better understanding of how others live. I feel like I'm helping people to live independently longer, and with the human contact that too many seniors don't get enough of. The seniors on my route and I share stories, I look forward to seeing them every week, and I think they look forward to seeing me, as well. I think of them as friends." Mitchell is a hero, and he'll be joined by hundreds of other amazing MOW Yolo donors of time and funds at next Thursday's 2nd annual "Driven To Be Heroes"🦸🦸♂️ Donor and Volunteer Recognition Celebration. Will you join us in the celebration in Downtown Woodland's Heritage Plaza? See the details below; no RSVP is required. Prefer to recognize these heroes with your own donation of time or funds?
