We are dedicated to renewing the promise of America.
About us
We are dedicated to renewing the promise of America by continuing the quest to realize our nation’s highest ideals. New America is a new kind of think-and-action tank: a civic platform that connects a research institute, technology lab, solutions network, media hub, and public forum. We generate big, bold ideas as templates for change. We design and advance evidence-based public policies. We surface, share, and scale locally generated and tested solutions to public problems through a national and global network of public, private, and civic partners. We develop legal, political, and technological tools to build democratic capacity and enable solutions to grow and spread. We tell stories about what is happening and what is possible, to give Americans a window into what we are capable of achieving together and a vision of what a renewed America could and should be.

A longish post to mark a week of recognizing the importance of media inclusion! In 2022, I launched the Rescripting Gender, Work, Family, and Care initiative at New America's Better Life Lab to work with storytellers to encourage and provide resources that aspire to more authentic, inclusive, and aspirational representation of gender roles, work and family challenges, and caregiving on screen -- building on the work of organizations that have been focused on similar topics for years. Last week, I had the honor of speaking at and attending several on-point important events that elevate this mission and the importance of on-screen & behind-the-scenes media representation -- which we know engages audiences by reflecting their lives, provides visibility, engenders empathy, and can move people to action. First up was the TheWrap Power Women Summit and the pleasure of joining an incredible panel with Dr. Stacy L. S. Smith Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and writers Linda Yvette Chávez & Nicole Asher, moderated by Syrinthia Studer, focused on on Reproductive Health & Caregiving Justice On Screen & Behind the Scenes, organized by Maikiko James Kirsten Schaffer at WIF. --> Wrap article with key takeaways is here: https://lnkd.in/e4R9dYSf. --> Panel video is here: https://lnkd.in/epav4zmj The second event was an incredibly inspiring Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Inclusion Summit and a panel focused on representation in the industry, moderated by Jerome Core with co-panelists Tiffany Chao & Diana Luna. I'm so grateful to Brandy R. Curry and the DEIA Team at the Television Academy for including me and the notion of gender, work, family, and care in this conversation! --> Read more/watch when the video is live: https://lnkd.in/ewBA9pRW Happily, this trip also coincided with a Caring Across Generations, Paid Leave for All, MomsRising.org, Moms First-sponsored screening of #Nightbitch, organized by the incredible Lydia Storie and her Caring Across team, for #NightbitchNightOut. This is a new film starring Amy Adams , which tells the story of motherhood in a country with little support for parents and unreasonable cultural expectations; the film is a glimpse into one privileged family's struggles, which is just the tip of the iceberg of the problem for tens of millions of parents who face (and put on themselves!) unreasonable expectations of parenting in a country without paid leave, child care, or wages that support their families. Content advisement work led by folks like Elizabeth Grizzle Voorhees at The Walt Disney Company couldn't be more important. My week ended with the chance to attend the Geena Davis Institute 20th Anniversary celebration! It was wonderful to honor the work of Madeline Di Nonno, Meredith Conroy and the whole GDI team and their incredible research on representation of women in media on screen & behind the scenes. I can't wait to keep growing our entertainment work in 2025 and to many more partnerships ahead. 🥂
