Check out this interesting story of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine students taking care of sea turtles in need to soon to be released and returned home. #TakingCareofWhatMatters
According to NOAA Fisheries Service, the annual average of Massachusetts cold-stunned turtles in the last 5 years is 739, compared to 20 years ago when it was only 139. Our Gulf Coast Aquatic Health Lab is #TakingCareOfWhatMatters by rehabilitating cold-stunned sea turtles that come from the New England area. On Monday, GCAHFS faculty and staff along with 8 Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine students received 23 cold-stunned sea turtles. The sea turtles are now recovering and will be released once our veterinarians determine they are healthy enough to be returned home. A big thanks to Drs. Alexandra Emelianchik and Debra Moore and CVM students: Carlee Blakeney, Ashley Booker, Olivia Clapp, Abby Hawkins, Savannah Johnston, Linda Marcano, Isabella Payne, and Lauren Thibault!

Great partnerships are enhancing educational opportunities at Mississippi State University. Thanks to Aurora Flight Sciences for investing in our students' experiences. #MaroonResearch #TakingCareofWhatMatters
From our manufacturing floor to the hands of students, composite materials are receiving a second life at the MSU Advanced Composites Institute: https://lnkd.in/eBiRNdvF This year, our Columbus, Mississippi team donated over $1 million worth of composite materials that, while no longer suitable for production aerosystems, still held substantial value for educational and research applications at the Mississippi State University research facility. These materials, including prepreg carbon fiber, resins, paints, and Kevlar, give engineering and manufacturing students the unique opportunity to work with industry-grade materials while learning and refining composite manufacturing techniques. This donation underscores our commitment to fostering innovation and supporting both the academic and professional growth of future manufacturing engineers and technicians. #manufacturing #innovation #aerospace

40% of Earth’s land is now classified as dryland, according to a U.N. report released today, December 9, 2024, and the consequences of this shift are being felt globally—from food shortages to water crises. Behind these critical findings are scientists Narcisa Pricope, PhD , a land systems scientist at Mississippi State University, who warns that this “aridity crisis” is unfolding within our lifetimes and impacting future generations. Alongside Dr. Barron Orr, lead scientist for the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification, these researchers offer actionable insights to build resilience, from rethinking crop cultivation to urban planning in moisture-scarce areas. "The aridity crisis is unfolding “in our lifetime,” Dr. Pricope said. “This is affecting our children.” Check out this news story on the report from The New York Times https://lnkd.in/drbWFK8k To read Global Threat of Drying Lands full report from the United Nations Convention to Combat Decertification https://lnkd.in/e2Hhk5YS Other news reports on the report The Guardian https://lnkd.in/gEwaQ9ry #ClimateScience #ResearchImpact #SustainabilityLeadership #UNReport

Economic development depends on a ready workforce. The Workforce Scholars Initiative is one way the Office of Research and Economic Development - Mississippi State University fosters innovation. Led by Lisa Gooden-Hunley, the program connects undergraduate students with internships and provides career development to have these students primed for jobs after graduation. The fall 2024 cohort recently held its graduation with representatives from businesses where the students did internships. #TakingCareofWhatMatters
