The Roosevelt Institute champions bold policy reforms that would redefine the American economy and our democracy.
About us
The Roosevelt Institute, a New York-based think tank, promotes bold policy reforms that would redefine the American economy and our democracy. With a focus on curbing corporate power and reclaiming public power, Roosevelt is helping people understand that the economy is shaped by choices—via institutions and the rules that structure markets—while also exploring the economics of race and gender and the changing 21st-century economy. Roosevelt is armed with a transformative vision for the future, working to move the country toward a new economic and political system: one built by many for the good of all. We bring together thousands of thinkers and doers—from a new generation of leaders in every state to Nobel laureate economists working to redefine the rules that guide our social and economic realities. We rethink and reshape everything from local policy to federal legislation, orienting toward a new economic and political system: one built by many for the good of all.

An innovative approach to tax law offers an opportunity to finally fund solutions to challenges that require large upfront investments—such as reparations for slavery. In a new brief, Roosevelt Fellow Jeremy Bearer-Friend makes the case that through a tax paid in stock, the US can finally pay its debt to those who helped build our country but were never paid for their work. ⬇️
My latest report on reparations is out! I propose a quick and easy way to raise $1 trillion for reparations in less than a year. https://lnkd.in/e3vuK8w2

Excited and honored to be taking the helm at Roosevelt Institute. Our economy should work for the many, not just the few. The Roosevelt community has been instrumental in the fight for shared prosperity, and I can't wait to jump back in in this new capacity. Let's get to work!
After a comprehensive search, we are thrilled to welcome Elizabeth Wilkins as Roosevelt’s next president and CEO. Her accomplished leadership in organizing, law, and government service make her the right leader to champion Roosevelt’s vision of a better economy and democracy in which all people can flourish. While at the FTC, Wilkins led work to ban noncompete clauses that limit workers' choices and pushed back on the health-care and tech intermediaries that use their market power against patients, consumers, and small businesses. Wilkins will bring that same bold leadership and ideas to Roosevelt’s mission of transforming and rebalancing power in our democracy and economy. 👏 As we announced in June, current Roosevelt President and CEO Felicia Wong will be transitioning to a new role with the Roosevelt Society, our people initiative focused on connecting and championing progressive leaders of all ages. We are so excited about this next chapter for Roosevelt. Join us in welcoming Elizabeth! https://lnkd.in/eD_tyxmx

The government can raise the 💲 funds and have the power to finance reparative policies. "Taxes are how societies share their resources. Taxes are how the public uses the law to share what we have and heal those who are injured. And it is through taxes that the United States can finally pay its debt to those who helped build our country but were never paid for their work." In a new brief, Jeremy Bearer-Friend details a policy innovation that can quickly raise a trillion dollars in one year ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/e_kmBaJM

An equitable & publicly managed fossil fuel wind-down is possible. Roosevelt Fellow Kate Aronoff provides a framework that emphasizes the need for government intervention. "The interventionist approach that policymakers have embraced in order to bolster low-carbon industries must be extended to include pathways toward phasing out the fossil fuel economy and repurposing its vital infrastructure and expertise." NEW 📃: Through taxes, the US can finally pay its debt to those who helped build our country but were never paid for their work. In a new brief, Jeremy Bearer-Friend argues that an innovative approach to tax law offers an opportunity to finally fund reparations for slavery. Critics of reparations have argued against its impact on the national deficit and who would pay for it. This brief addresses these arguments and offers a strategy for quickly and fairly raising substantial funds and a policy innovation framework that can raise a trillion dollars in one year.
