  • It’s Giving Tuesday! A global movement that inspires kindness and generosity, Giving Tuesday encourages us all to give, whether through time, donations, or sharing our voices. Every act of generosity—big or small—makes a difference. At Safe Kids, our mission is to prevent unintentional injuries, the number one cause of death for children in the U.S. Each year, we provide thousands of free safety devices, reach millions with life-saving safety education, and check thousands of car seats to ensure that no parent has to endure the heartbreaking loss of a child to a preventable injury. This Giving Tuesday, you can make a real difference in a child's life. Your generous donation will help us continue our work and protect families across the country. Give in honor of a special kid in your life and be part of something bigger. • This Thanksgiving, we at Safe Kids Worldwide reflect on over 35 years of dedication to preventing unintentional childhood injuries and saving lives. Since our founding in 1987, we’ve been fueled by a mission to protect children and empower families with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe. We are grateful for our incredible community—our partners, coalitions, funders, and advocates—who have shared this journey with us. Together, we’ve made a difference, and together, we will continue to work towards a future where every child can grow, play, and thrive safely. This holiday season, as we gather with loved ones, let’s all take a moment to check in on the safety of our children. Simple steps can make all the difference in preventing injuries and keeping our youngest safe. Thank you for being a part of this important work. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Safe Kids. 🦃❤️

  • Safe Kids Worldwide reposted this

This week Tesla is expected to announce an update to its Full Self Driving program to allow certain Tesla models to serve as robotaxis. For Safe Kids Worldwide, the announcement is a great opportunity to highlight our work through the Safe Kids Advancing Vehicles Alliance (SKAVA). SKAVA began with a simple but important question. How will automated vehicles and emerging vehicle technologies impact children’s safety? Our group has brought together leaders in the auto industry, academia, and advocates to discuss how the future of driverless vehicles will impact children. We also have examined how emerging vehicle safety features which may help lead to a fully autonomous future can impact children’s safety now. Things like Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and new technologies designed to protect pedestrians are on the road today and can make a big difference in saving lives. As we look to a future where more and more systems perform functions once reserved for drivers, SKAVA is committed to making sure that children’s safety is part of the conversation. Our Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), position paper, white paper and stakeholder engagement can help guide ongoing system development.

  • This #NationalChildPassengerSafetyWeek, we released a new study! The report, Booster Seat Use in the USA: Breakthroughs and Barriers, found that four out of five parents moved their child out of a booster seat before the child was big enough— and that three in four are unaware that kids need to ride in boosters until they're at least 4-foot-9-inches tall. "Motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of death for children ages 4 to 10," said Torine (Brooks) Creppy, president of Safe Kids Worldwide. "Booster seats save lives and prevent serious injuries but only if we use them and make sure they are adjusted properly. Here's a great first step: once your child is big enough to use a booster seat, keep using it until they can safely ride in a seat belt alone. It's the best way to keep your child safe." • It was great to see and connect with so many of our traffic safety partners this week in Indianapolis for the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Annual Meeting. We were inspired to hear from Sophie Shulman of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA on how the agency is working to address pedestrian safety and from so many industry leaders who are working on the frontier of automation and other next generation safety technologies. Safe Kids is excited and ready to partner in this important work as we strive to build a #SafeSystem for everyone.
