Today 20 children representatives from the Kenya Children Assembly joined tech companies, government agencies, and civil society organizations to discuss improving online child safety in Kenya. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 1️⃣ Underrepresentation in Tech: Children feel underrepresented and misrepresented by tech companies in the design of products, with limited child-friendly platforms, SIM cards, and age-appropriate content. 2️⃣ Gender Bias: Over-emphasis on sexual abuse facing girls while there is very limited targeting to boys, yet cases of OCSEA affecting boys are equally on the rise 3️⃣ Internet Addiction: children highlighted that internet addiction is becoming a menace, with children as young as 2 being addicted to the internet. They also shared that many children are now using the internet for betting and gambling. Some attested to even earning money through writing platforms. 4️⃣ Content Oversight: They highlighted that the government needed to do more in monitoring harmful, content is not child-friendly. They majorly highlighted Telegram as a problem. These insights will be presented tomorrow to tech companies and government agencies as we work towards collaborative frameworks and policies to enhance online child safety. In attendance government agencies including the Directorate of Children Services, NCAJ, ICTA, CA, ODPP, KICTANET, and CSOs under the Online Safety Forum and Joining Forces Alliance. We look forward to a fruitful engagement that should lead to policy development and implementation in ensuring children’s safety online. "This is a shared responsibility for all of us and the tech industry has an important role to play." – Sean Litton, Tech Coalition 📌As we reach a critical juncture where a shift towards prevention is the only viable route to curb the sustained increase in child sexual exploitation and abuse online, Sean featured as a panellist at the #WeProtectGlobal Summit 2024 last week where he spoke in our plenary session on 'Building the case for prevention'. 💡From Safety by Design to investment in interventions targeting those at risk of perpetrating child sexual abuse or experiencing it, it was a rich discussion about the systemic drivers of the issue and the multiple causal pathways to offending. ✅There are some great resources available from the Tech Coalition's Lantern project to the Safe Futures Hub being led by Nicolas Makharashvili to MOORE | Preventing Child Sexual Abuse's Prevention Global knowledge hub and the innovative work being done with offenders by the Lucy Faithfull Foundation. We are proud to work with Alliance members and partners like these organisations and many others who are leading innovative prevention work to keep children safe online. #StrongerTogether 💜 #EndCSEA #Prevention #SafeOnline
