While it’s cold for small businesses in general in today’s economy when it comes to access to capital, for Black-owned businesses it’s freezing. The numbers are startling. Kudos to my client PuffCuff and its founder Ceata Lash for sharing this story and for her resolve and determination to keep pushing forward despite extraordinary obstacles. We see you Ceata; but I challenge all of us to do one better. Last month, I attended (and sponsored!) Unleashed Live, a facilitated two-day leadership retreat in Madison created by good friend and fellow business owner Amber Swenor. The event’s keynote speaker was Dr. Sagashus Levingston, PhD. I hadn’t heard of or met Dr. Levingston before, and her keynote blew my mind. Do you ever hear people speak and say something in such a powerful way that everything suddenly makes sense? That’s how it was when I listened to Dr. Levingston. At one point, she said to us, “Give yourself permission to do good and do well.” Meaning, there’s no reason why you can’t run an impactful business and tap into your version of success at the same time. Maybe you want to build a multi-million dollar business. A multi-billion dollar business. Maybe you only want to work 15 hours a week. Maybe you want to build a legacy business—one that continues after you’re gone. Maybe you just want to take Fridays off this summer.
