I hope Shari Redstone sees the value the Skydance merger will bring to the Hollywood brand that has been her family's business for more than thirty years. Some reports on the M&A offer say that Ms. Redstone is "hesitant" to approve the revised deal which gives her less for her share of National Amusements Inc. than the previous offer. I think the trades who are reporting on this whole M&A process are looking to hype the drama instead of allowing for the time it takes to ponder each step in the process. MLC got tens, M's and B's on their minds. 🚨$2.5 Billion Paid Out in Royalties by The MLC! In just three and a half years, the Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) has distributed $2.5 billion to songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers across the US, a whopping $1 billion added just this past year! The MLC is moving fast. Their database now includes 42 million works with an impressive 90% match rate. Fewer royalties are slipping through the cracks thanks to innovations like their Matching Tool. But there’s still a big challenge. Billions in unmatched royalties are sitting idle in the "black box," waiting to be claimed. That’s where technology, especially AI, comes into play. More royalties will find their rightful owners as we continue improving these systems. BBC AMCerica I’ve gotten a LOT of questions on this website about this transaction. “AMC Networks has acquired full control of BBC America, its joint venture with BBC Studios.” https://lnkd.in/eh8nvSWy This is a pretty easy one to suss - and a crystal clear indication of two companies going in two VERY different directions… AMC is still controlled by OG Cable TV royalty, the Dolan family. Their CEO is Kristin Dolan. They are tripling down on what they know: Cable TV. Yes, it’s a dying business, but BBCA still spins off cash from affiliate fees and advertising, and, up until now AMCN only got 49.9% of the fruits of their labor. Additionally, this deal eliminates substantial long term contractual and financial obligations AMC has had to BBC Studios. Considering the immediate upside, and what they paid for the first half ($200 mil), $42 mil ain’t a bad price to pay. BBC Studios is the for-profit arm of BBC. They recently acquired BritBox International. As BBC Studios Media CEO Rebecca Glashow said, they are “expanding and diversifying our market presence in the U.S,” aka focusing on content arms-dealing and solidifying their streaming business. Thus, the influx of cash, as well as the divorce of exclusivity to BBCA, makes a ton of dollars and cents. Happy to answer more questions in the chat. But this one is not a complicated puzzle to piece together.

Two Billion Music Streaming Consumers? Universal Music Group thinks that's possible. They're predicting 1B by 2028 (as is Goldman Sachs, it's worth noting). We're exactly 2/3 of the way there, with 667M globally. That's astonishing. Ten years ago, Spotify had launched in the US three years earlier - and they were stuck under 15M premium subscribers worldwide. Since 2014 the growth has been exponential. We talk about Spotify like it's proxy for all streaming, but its not. Apple Music & Amazon Music together have a quarter of the western market share. Gaana in India has over 200M. Tencent in China. There are many others in local territories. The next phase of growth will be fragmented among these services and it will come in non-western territories. “In 2022, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) accepted a (near) music industry-wide settlement to improve songwriters’ streaming royalty rates in the United States from January 1, 2023. The settlement – known as ‘Phonorecords IV’ or ‘CRB IV’ – will see songwriters and music publishers paid a headline rate of 15.35% of a given interactive streaming service’s US revenue by 2027. That rate is being ‘phased in’, because ‘Phonorecords IV’ covers the five-year period between 2023 and 2027: In 2023 (starting January 1), songwriters and music publishers were to be paid a headline rate of 15.1% of a US service’s revenue; in 2024, this increased to 15.2%; in 2025, it will increase to 15.25%; in 2026 it will increase to 15.3%; and in 2027 it will reach 15.35%. StubHub has postponed its IPO to autumn due to "stagnant market conditions," amid rising calls for tighter regulation of secondary ticketing in the US. The delay follows a surge in advocacy, with artists and fans sending 65,000 messages to lawmakers for more regulation. StubHub's IPO, managed by JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, aims for a $16.5 billion valuation. The company faces increasing scrutiny, particularly from the Fix the Tix campaign, urging Congress to address fake tickets and deceptive practices.
