Women form almost 50% of the Egyptian population and consist of 19% of the labour force.
67% of working women are involved in the Agriculture sector and form 23% of the total number of
Agricultural workers in Egypt. The need for a woman to join the labour force increases when she is
the household head and is struggling to support her family. The number of female-headed households is fairly high in Egypt and ranges between 17-24% depending on the region. Most of these female headed households are barely surviving under the poverty line. There are several reasons for their extreme level of poverty beginning with the lack of education resulting in illiteracy, which restricts access to gainful employment, and access to valuable information resources and credit opportunities and so on. When Egyptian women do manage to find employment, they are systematically paid less than their male counterparts even within the same labour tasks and responsibilities.
