1) The membership of this work group contains no one from commercial publishing, in other words, the group that creates most of what the other groups consume. 2) Contrary to the contention that the comments are "out of scope", legality is an absolutely critical requirement that is in scope by definition. Does the NISO's enabling legislation even allow it to promulgate a standard that is known to be illegal? Todd Carpenter 3) The signatories are a Murderer's Row of organizations representing every aspect of commercial book publishing including agents, authors, and publishers from most parts of the world. In short, it looks to an outsider like the problem is that this group was convened with the wrong charter and the wrong membership. As Ms. Halperin suggests, it's a pity the process was allowed to waste two years of everyone's time.

Senators from both parties are looking for openings to move artificial intelligence bills through the chamber in the final weeks of the year, following a Commerce subcommittee hearing that highlighted AI-generated threats to consumers. Subcommittee Chairman John Hickenlooper (D-CO) in his opening statement flagged five AI-related bills including several that have cleared the Commerce Committee: "The Future of AI Innovation Act, fosters partnerships between government, the private sector, and academia to promote AI innovation. "Validation and Evaluation for Trustworthy AI Act, creates a voluntary framework which will enable third-party audits of AI systems. "AI Research, Innovation, and Accountability Act increases R&D into content authenticity, requires consumer AI transparency, and creates a framework to hold AI developers accountable. "The COPIED Act, has not yet been considered by the Committee, but increases federal R&D in synthetic content detection and creates enforceable rules to prevent bad actors from manipulating labels on content. "Lastly, the TAKE IT DOWN Act makes it a criminal offense to create or distribute non-consensual intimate images (NCII) of individuals."

#ArtificialIntelligence feels like it's been a buzzy topic for years at this point. If you've ever heard of the Gartner hype cycle, Andrea Jacobs of CAS, says certain types of AI--like large language models and ChatGPT-- sit at the start of that cycle, heading towards "inflated expectations." In a talk during the Open Board Meeting at #ACSFall2024, Jacobs gave some insight into how CAS is approaching the use of artificial intelligence. I have to say, of all the things I've read about AI, what Jacobs had to say is some of the most thoughtful and realistic I've heard to date. Chatbots are a risky for endeavor for newsrooms (automated and highly-visible), and political chatbots more so. Kudos to Ryan Serpico and all others involved in the development of this fantastic new tool to ask questions about Kamala Harris via San Francisco Chronicle. I like that there's a link to editorial guidelines right there, and a detailed rundown of how it works. And a feedback form! This is a template for anyone looking to do the same at your newsroom.
