Having a portfolio isn't enough anymore, even writing tests aren't the be-all and end-all of hiring freelance writers. What I want is references from previous clinets. Testimonials and LinkedIn refernces are good, but I want to be able to reach out to that person and suss out what you're like to work with. A positive working relationship is very important, and speaking to your former POC at whatever agency or company who you previously freelanced for is crucial for me. How Kendall Cherry created consistent $25k+ months and 2Xed her revenue as a content ghostwriter Before we started working together, Kendall was knee-deep in her Google docs — writing all the client work and copy editing every piece of content herself. My advice for anyone considering a career in social media, from someone with 10 years of experience in the field: 1) You’re rarely fully 'off the clock,' especially as a social media manager. Social never stops. 2) Expect criticism. Creative work is subjective, and not everyone will love what you produce. 3) Be ready to pivot quickly—new trends, platforms, and workflows pop up constantly. 4) There's no sure way to predict the success of a campaign or video. Don’t expect to go viral immediately, and don’t let it discourage you when it doesn't. 5) Consistency is key. Happy Friday, everyone! Today's post is the beginning of a several-weeks' long series we're piloting about food labels. As I scroll my Facebook feed or look at news sites, it seems that an awful lot of attention lately is being given to the labels on the food we eat. What do they mean? What's "good"? What's "bad"? Does any of this really matter? Because of this, I thought it would be helpful to spend some time "demystifying" what those labels mean. These posts aren't meant to scare-monger, but instead, to put your mind at ease and give you some actionable advice that you can take with you into the grocery store, or into your next conversation with a local farmer. First on our list: antibiotics. Antibiotics have gotten a HUGELY bad rap in the last couple of decades - some of which is misplaced, and some of which is well-deserved anger. It's only been for about a century (a little less) that we've had antibiotics in our arsenal as humans. Penicillin was first discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming, then introduced on a large scale in the mid-1940s. Antibiotics were, to say the least, life-changing. The World Health Organization estimates that antibiotics add a whopping 20 years, on average, to our life expectancy. All kinds of common diseases that we don't think about much now, are eradicated or significantly ameliorated because of antibiotics. We've all had strep throat - at one point in time (as late as the 1970s, in fact) strep throat was often a fatal disease. Now, it's just an annoyance - painful, sure, but a course of antibiotics means it's just a few days off work or out of daycare. In animals, antibiotics are also important. Though not a daily occurrence to say the least, we've used antibiotics to treat issues like mastitis in our sheep. Antibiotics are seldom a producer's first line of defense - preventative measures like good nutrition, rotational grazing, and maintaining appropriate stocking densities are always more ideal for lots of reasons. First, of course, is that it's better for the welfare of the animal. Why let an animal get sick if you can avoid it? There's also a huge issue of antibiotic resistance. Use too many antibiotics over time, and bacteria get smart - they find out how to evade these drugs and eventually, become less effective. Or worse, superbugs develop - enter, MRSA. This staph bacteria is resistant to many of the antibiotics typically used to treat staph infections and can be deadly. But ditching antibiotics entirely isn't the answer. Just as humans get sick or injured and need the right medicine, so, too, do animals. Antibiotics are not the problem. The problem is that, for many years, they weren't being used correctly. Something you haven't considered but will likely come up in interviews for Social roles... What does your ideal next role look like? I've been asked this even with a position description on the table 🤔 Here's what to consider if you're ever asked this as well: ❶ What is your Social specialization? Where do you usually shine? ❷ Do you like being in the field, overseeing the team, strategizing? Why? ❸ Are there areas of the position description where you'd be doing your favorite type of work? Emphasis that. ❹ Would you want to travel in the role? ❺ What would the rest of the team look like supporting your role? ❻ What would your ideal title be for the role you described? Some completely unsolicited advice -- Don't lean too heavily on the position description when it comes to Social roles right now. Companies are still learning what they need from Social teams so they're adjusting to the strengths of candidates to build one. This could be your opportunity to turn just another position description into your ideal role.

Sooooo I am seeing so many "we're hiring" posts for content writers and copywriters that list 4,598 that the writer will be expected to do and ZERO indication of what the pay will be. Honestly, I've just started to scroll on by when that information is lacking, and I'm sure I'm not the only freelance writer, who would make a great addition to your team, that is doing so. We need to stop normalizing social media addiction. ESPECIALLY if you work in social media. "I'm doing research!" is not an excuse to spend hours mindlessly scrolling on TikTok or Instagram. As a social media manager, I'll be the first to admit my screen time used to range from 4-7 hours depending on the day. And while yes, sometimes it really IS research... It's usually not. When social media is your job, it can be extremely hard to "leave work at work." You're constantly moderating mentions, checking if those 6 am scheduled posts went up okay, and researching trending topics because what's hot right now will be old news in 15 minutes. But if I'm honest, there's a fine line between professional obligation and personal obsession. Spending hours and hours consuming content is not healthy, no matter what way you pitch it. The purpose of social is to connect with people, foster community, and inspire change. Let's not forget that we can do it offline, too.

There is a secret I have been hiding from y'all 😩 I failed in the first 6 months of starting a career in social media management ❌ I wasn't actively shaping my own experience. ❌ I didn't prioritize opportunities to learn from others. ❌I was focusing on the wrong things. Don't hire a #socialmediamanager if you won't let them do their job.... I was working with a company who gave me ZERO flexibility or autonomy in #content approval. They would come to me each week wanting to take a new #approach to content, where I would then create new scripts. They would approve the approve the scripts for my posts and I would spend my time to film. Afterwards, they asked for numerous revisions and we ended up not even posting most of the content. This resulted in me no longer enjoying the role.... If you're interviewing for a #socialmedia role, ask about the approval process for content. Their answer could be a red or green flag for the job. What's the approval process look like at your organization?

I’ve received many half-baked writing assignments. No keywords. No mention of content goals. No brief. Some writers see this lack of direction as an open road to creative freedom.
