New research by my inimitable colleague Michael Chui and others updates a 2018 report that found AI could play a major role globally in promoting not only productivity and economic growth but also social good. That report outlined how AI capabilities, from natural language processing to sound recognition and tracking, could be used in 170 use cases to benefit society—including to promote equality and inclusion, improve crisis response, and protect the environment. Generative AI has opened even more possibilities. Today, they discovered a total of about 600 use cases, more than a threefold increase. #ArtificialIntelligence #SocialGood #TechForGood

Platforms outsource content moderation to fact-checking groups so they can flag #disinformation likely promoted by their recommender algorithms. 🪵 This feels akin to a logging company symbolically planting a sapling after felling 100 trees. 🤝 So what's the relationship like between platforms and fact-checking groups? And is legislation like the EU #DigitalServicesAct, which aims to increase transparency around these algorithms, muscular enough? Incredible data out today from the #PeoplesClimateVote - the largest poll on climate change in the world: ✅ 80% of people globally want stronger #ClimateAction from their leaders. ✅ 53% of people globally are more worried about #ClimateChange than last year. ✅ 56% of people globally think about climate change daily or weekly. ✅ 69% of the world's population have experienced extreme weather that are impacting big life decisions. With more than half of the world's population voting in 2024 - people around the world have an opportunity to support candidates who will urgently increase climate action.
