Arevon Energy, Inc.’s Vice President of Transmission and Interconnection, Brindavani M., recently participated in the Alternative Technologies for Grid Planning and Operations panel discussion at the GridTECH Connect Forum in California. The panel focused on various grid-enhancing technologies including power flow controllers and topology optimization to help meet the increasing demands of electrification. Brinda shared her insights as to how various obstacles are hindering Generator Interconnection projects, including delays in the construction of transmission upgrades which involves siting, permitting, and large investments. She explained that if Transmission Operators adopt and implement grid-enhancing technologies, it can help improve grid reliability, lower the costs for customers and rate payers, and free up the queue of Generator Interconnection projects. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced selections totaling $142 million for 123 small business projects for research in multiple areas, including clean energy and decarbonization. We are thrilled to share that the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) has selected Ozark Integrated Circuits, Inc. for a grant of $1.1 million to advance our work on high-temperature flow rate instruments for geothermal reservoir monitoring using the Ozark IC eXtreme Node® (or XNode®) single board computer, which can operate in the extreme conditions experienced in Energy Exploration, Aerospace, Space Exploration, and Industrial Controls. This project tackles the challenges of increasing reliability and functionality of high temperature electronics, specifically in fracture zone management. The recent PJM capacity auction resulted in a significant price surge to $269.92 per megawatt-day, nearly tenfold last year's increase. Mark Nelson, Managing Director of Radiant Energy Group, appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box this morning to discuss the latest developments in big tech investments in nuclear energy. His appearance coincided with Amazon's announcement of a $500+ million investment to develop nuclear reactors in partnership with X-energy. During the interview, Nelson highlighted the emerging trend among tech giants: "What we'll start to see is a race between the biggest tech companies to make bigger and bigger, more immediate investments in nuclear power." “Elevate Renewables is excited that PJM stakeholders voted out of the MRC and MC a proposal to enhance the timing and availability of Capacity Interconnection Rights (CIRs) and adopted a ‘generator replacement’ process very similar to nine previously FERC-approved processes--two of which are in the MISO and SPP regions,” stated Tonja Wicks, Elevate VP of Regulatory Affairs. Wicks continued, “This CIR Transfer enhancement allows existing generators to align the timing of de-energizing a retiring generator with energizing of a new replacement resource at that same location. The fact that this expedited interconnection process will take place outside the traditional backlogged queue and be completed in 10 months or less makes it far superior to the status quo. With this shortened timeline, these replacement resources will have an opportunity to be included in reliability solutions.” Elevate Renewables, a developer and operator of battery storage solutions, commends PJM and its stakeholders for advancing a process that recognizes the viability of projects with complete site control, established infrastructure, and existing permits—regardless of technology. Lim (https://lnkd.in/gy39TPDF) The Department of Energy (“DOE”) issued Department Circular (“DC”) 2024 No. DC2024-08-0025 on 19 August 2024 entitled Prescribing Further Policies to Enhance the Net-Metering Program for Renewable Energy Systems Amending, For this Purpose, Department Circular (DC) No. DC2020-10-0022. Under Section 10 of the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 (“RE Act”), distribution utilities (“DU”) are required to enter into Net-Metering Agreements with qualified end-users who install renewable energy (“RE”) systems. These agreements must be made upon the request of the end-user, subject to technical considerations, and without any form of discrimination. The ERC, DUs, and all relevant parties were mandated to establish the necessary mechanisms for the physical connection and commercial arrangements to ensure the success of the Net-Metering Program, in line with the Grid and Distribution Codes. In light of this, on 27 May 2013, the ERC issued Resolution No. 9, Series of 2013 or the “Net-Metering Rules”, pursuant to the RE Act and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (“IRR”). 🔋 Microgrid Knowledge's Lisa Cohn recently sat down with Fermata Energy’s Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs, Steve Letendre, PhD, to discuss recent legislation in California and more broadly the importance of bidirectional charging for grid reliability and resilience. While the passage of SB 59 in California helps to raise awareness about Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology, Steve says that it does not address the key challenges in order for California and other states to maximize bidirectional charging benefits. He shared what really needs to happen, including: 1. A streamlined process that allows EV drivers to connect bidirectional chargers to the grid. 2. Incentives must be provided for V2X that are comparable to those currently available for stationary storage. 3. Compensation for the value that bidirectional EV charging infrastructure provides to both customers and the grid. Generac has been selected for a $50M federal grant to enhance grid resilience across California’s water utilities, building on the DOE’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships Program. With this funding, Generac will collaborate with the California Water Association to integrate clean energy microgrids, forming virtual power plants (VPPs) to alleviate grid strain. This project will install battery energy storage at over 100 water facilities across California, ensuring reliable power during local outages and reducing peak load. Expected to create 200 union construction jobs and 33 direct positions, it will also contract $27M with businesses led by underrepresented groups. Generac’s President and CEO, Aaron Jagdfeld, expressed pride in this opportunity, emphasizing Generac’s longstanding commitment to critical infrastructure resilience. New Report from NREL: Tidal Energy in Cook Inlet. The purpose of this study was to identify whether tidal energy could be an opportunity for the Railbelt, and the results show that tidal energy could supply a significant portion of the Railbelt’s electrical demand. However, much more analysis is needed before actual tidal energy integration could take place, such as detailed engineering studies that investigate sub-second dynamic response of the new technology, interconnection studies, financial feasibility studies, and more. https://lnkd.in/dsJz3UHj

The National Hydropower Association (NHA) has commended the Biden Administration for its newly proposed rule that would treat hydropower the same as solar, wind, and other emission-free energy sources. This proposed rule, part of the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) Sections 45Y and 48E tax credits (Tech Neutral Credits), designates various water power technologies – including hydropower, pumped storage, marine, and hydrokinetic technologies – as eligible for these credits. By doing so, the rule aims to ensure that hydropower receives equal tax incentives as other renewable energy sources, bolstering the industry and enhancing its capacity to contribute to a 24/7 clean and reliable energy grid. “Landmark legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act is game changer for American clean energy generation, and we’re grateful that the Biden Administration understands water power’s key role through issuing this Proposed Rule,” said NHA President and CEO, Malcolm Woolf. “We thank the Administration, as well as water power’s many champions in Congress who helped shape this bill with a vision for our industry.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eZqvHrCe #hydropower #hydroelectric #renewableenergy

A new report from The Brattle Group, prepared for GridLab, finds that California’s market potential for virtual power plants (VPPs) could hit 7.5 GW by 2035! That would exceed 15% of peak demand.
