What are the most effective ways to encourage social media managers to engage with their team?
When I was working on turning our internal team of subject matter experts into an external team of part-time brand evangelists, we gamified the process. We focused on building each persons individual social network, and rewarded the highest growth. This is obviously a benefit to the company, but it's even more of a benefit to the individual. When they recognize that the company is investing in them, and encouraging them to build their personal brand, that's when the greatest reward comes for companies. Ironically, companies get the greatest return on investment from employees when they let go of control.

What are the most effective ways to encourage social media managers to engage with their team?
Most of us don't like to talk about our failures. And the failure of our team is the failure of the leader. That being said, you have to trust your team members to the point that they have room to fail. That's not the same as setting them up for failure. But giving them the freedom of choice that COULD lead to failure is the only way to give them the freedom of choice to succeed in ways you may not have been able to imagine.

What are the most effective ways to encourage social media managers to engage with their team?
One thing I've found helpful is to get consensus from the group on how those tools should be used. It's one thing to say, "We will use Slack, Google Drive, and Canva." But it's another to get the group together for show and tell to see how others are using those tools. Often, especially in remote settings, tools aren't used to their full capacity! By watching others use those tools, it can strengthen the skill of the user, while simultaneously strengthening the relationship between users.

What are the most effective ways to encourage social media managers to engage with their team?
Most people think that once a conversation has happened, communication has occurred. That's not always the case. Once you set expectations, it's important to go back and revisit those expectations. Most likely, you'll be surprised that there has been some misunderstanding of what was expected! So it's important to not only set clear expectations in the beginning, but to also set a clear timeline that will be used to review the expectations, work done, and outcomes.

On February 29th, 2016, I had the opportunity to travel with an evangelist to Malawi, Africa for almost 3 months. While there, I served as an assistant evangelist and traveled to 10 different districts where we met with leaders and discussed issues the churches of Christ in Malawi were facing. Speaking through a translator, I would present topics for up to 2 hours to groups of more than 300. It was also my job to interview preachers to develop a directory for the churches of Christ in Malawi…

It was also my job to interview preachers to develop a directory for the churches of Christ in Malawi. As a result, I learned some portions of Chichewa and am interested in developing my knowledge of other languages.Each week when we arrived in a village, which oftentimes did not have electricity or running water, we would set up a tent on Wednesday and camp until Sunday. Even though my purpose in going to Africa was to help with the education of certain topics, I know that I learned more than I taught. It was a wonderful experience with memories that will last a lifetime. I look forward to the next time I am given such an opportunity to serve in a similar capacity.
