What can we learn from Apple calculator and other announcements? Product and Marketing matters - a well designed and built product, demoed in the proper way is like magic. https://lnkd.in/gHbqxc26  https://lnkd.in/gieg3btq https://lnkd.in/g8JDkTku There is no new AI.  Handwriting recognition has been good and around for a while. This a creative use of it. We have also been able to have formulas and smart inference for a long time. It never gets old to mix the right fundamentals in computer science, product and marketing to build great products.

I love Rick Rubin's book, The Cultural Act: A Way of Being. Each time I pick up something new. It's for artists, but the way Rick describes what an artist is, it's anyone who creates anything. The work we create and share with the world has a symbiotic loop. Our culture informs who we are. Who we are informs our work. Our work then feeds back into the culture, allowing the process to restart and evolve. This is why flow state is such a magical state of being. When we let the work drive, we are a part of and contributing to something bigger than ourselves. The thing holding us back is (typically) not the work. When we make the moment about the work, we allow ourselves to let the work take the wheel and drive. Image by AI (very cool)

Geoffrey Hinton's contributions is significant enough that I won't quibble with the category for his prize. (Nobel committee could create a special category just for him for all I care.) Widely (and rightfully) recognized as a leading expert in deep learning, his research touches everything from * Foundational concepts such as backprop https://lnkd.in/gMunbBzA * Foundational model architectures such as AlexNet https://lnkd.in/gq2JPJ6h * Optimization algorithms such as Momentum and RMSProp * Visualization techniques such as t-SNE https://lnkd.in/gjuw3vhA I don't think it's possible to overstate how profound the impact of machine learning and artificial intelligence will have on society, promising to unlock discoveries, improving productivity. Even ideas about what mastery of language or reasoning means, will need to be re-thought. Professor Hinton deserves all the credit for all of this.

As the era of tech hypergrowth comes to a close, technology companies will continue to cut costs in order to maintain their rate of return. We can look forward to more draconian RTO mandates, new emphasis on off-shoring, layoffs and a return of wage suppression cartels. The answer to this problem was the same answer in the era of the railroads and the era of telecoms: organized labor. Happy Labor Day.

I was reading one of the 2 newsletters I follow - The Grappler's Diary on Substack - and the author (Chris Wojcik) pointed out one of those "well, yeah, of course" kind of ideas that made me stop and think for a bit. Wojcik pointed out that it takes more and more effort to reach higher levels of skill in jiu jitsu. This is of course true of any skill. I've certainly seen that with programming. The easiest and biggest leaps are at the beginning. Going from zero to your first working program is pretty easy. Becoming a true professional developer takes years. Continuous improvement takes introspection, feedback, seeking out training and education, and lots and lots of work. And the noticeable improvements these days are small: cleaner code, improved readability, and better organization. Little things that matter. And the more time I spend as a "programmer" the less I write code and the more time I spend on related things: technical design, code review, stakeholder relations, project management, and more. Just as you get more skilled in martial arts, the more time you spend teaching, coaching, and advising, and the less time you spend getting beat up by kids.

Having lived in SF bay area for so long, I came to know the big coffee culture scene here. I was totally consumed by it a while ago and spent years trying to attain the “perfect" latte. I published a fun coffee story and my entire home setup, which took weeks of research and multiple iterations, in my blog link in bio. Meanwhile, to all fellow coffee loving tech peeps, here are some top tips that no one told me. Put it in practice at home or in microkitchens. - A big factor in preparing milk suitable for latte art is pressure of the wand. If this is important to you, you need to get a machine that has a strong enough pressure. - When pulling shots, put in 18g of beans and extract 30g of espresso. - The darker the roast, the coarser the setting should be on the grinder, the lighter the roast, the finer the setting should be. - When adjusting the grind setting, do so while the grinder is working if there are beans in the hopper. Otherwise, a bean can get stuck between the burrrs. - Pulling a shot should take 20-30 sec in time, or based on observation. It should look like caramel going out, not a waterfall. - Eventually work your way to using a bottomless portafilter. It punishes you for all the small imperfections when preparing your coffee puck, like any tilt, and uneven distribution. It does so by spraying the espresso all over the place. The more you can get it to flow uniformly, the better your preparation of espresso, objectively. - Seal your beans in a vacuum, so they don’t go stale. The more stale the beans, the more minor adjustment you need to make to grind finer. - When steaming milk in your pitcher, you can tell if it’s done by holding the pitcher and as soon as the heat becomes unbearable i.e. stings, it’s done. - Taking a latte art course at a local coffee shop was the best boost for me to start nailing latte art.

The book conveys a powerful message: never give up, even in the face of challenges, because what truly matters is giving your best effort. Today I randomly searched for more information about this book and discovered that an AI-generated movie depicting its plot is created.

Y'alls know accessibility is important to me, and that comes in a lot of forms! I wanted to share out two things I've been working on recently that follow the a11y theme, with Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) right around the corner: First, plugging the work we've been doing at Ro around building technology to give patients more access to healthcare so they can achieve their health goals via Patient Intake. Intake isn't "just a form" - it's the key way for patients to communicate their health history, goals, and preferences to their providers in a way that feels human. Behind the scenes, we're making sure every piece of information a patient provides is structured to make sure every point is seen and heard so that our providers can deliver the best possible personalized care.
