𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 Agile Leadership Network Houston discussion this evening was led by Chad Gibbons, Software Engineering Manager at Google. Thanks to our servant leader Sesh Veeraraghavan drawing on his lifetime connections, he brings quality leaders in for our discussions. Thank you Chad Gibbons for the work to prepare to lead us through this stimulating thought and conversation. To set the stage for how to create an environment of innovation when an organization’s inertia is against it, Chad stepped through several historical innovative pivot points. He discussed how each technology existed long before it was commercialized.  -Cloud Computing (the old utility computing)         -Commercial Internet -Distributed computing -Payments -Generative AI He’s seen how hard it is for business to innovate from the bottom up but equally as hard to innovate from the top down.  He highly recommends bringing in outside experts. I was thrilled Steve Pinckney, MBA, PCC, SPC6 joined us again tonight. I turned around to give him a nod as he devotes his career to helping companies build cultures that support innovation. Chad spent time talking about innovation through start-ups. He’s done a few and shared what worked and what didn’t work. The Wade Pinder, with Product Houston was also there tonight. I turned to give Wade a nod as he devotes his time to leading and encouraging start-ups in Houston. Businesses need to allow time and space to innovate, individuals need to make time to innovate, and constraints are as important as incentives to direct and motivate designers. Without constraints designers’ flounder. Aim for 80% success and expect 30% of projects to fail. Set up the culture to fail quickly. We walked away with a lot to think about. Improving steps up again with food and space. This show of support for the value #ALNH brings to Houston businesses keeps the organization’s overhead low. I saw this article on The Verge this morning... Engineering is inherently challenging and uncertain. We learn from our failures, we're inspired by our successes and we move forward. It’s about progress, not perfection. To answer the Delta CEO’s question: In the last six months, Apple’s Business Manager has broken down twice, wiping every managed profile, configuration, and application from all Apple devices in our company—including my IT Technicians’ MacBooks. Imagine if, during one of those incidents, we had decided to switch to SurfaceBooks, Intune, and CrowdStrike. Instead of focusing on ways to mitigate such an outage. There will always be another outage. It is up to leadership and teams to build resilient systems and foster a culture of safety and resilience. Things will always break, often in ways we never imagined or planned for. It's concerning that Delta's recovery time lagged behind its competitors greatly, and this is their response.

I have been thinking about Innovation. Last night, I was at the Arizona Technology Council Governors Awards where my organization was honored with an Innovation of the Year award. I had put together a combination of techniques that suddenly made generative AI useful to us, and through lots of conversations and iterations, something unlocked. Suddenly, the team had begun wide adoption almost overnight. What we discovered was people had found ways to make the hard work easier, and were doing more of it. This was proof that mission driven people given better tools, crumble obstacles. We made more revenue, people spent measurably less time doing drudgery, and more things that we considered difficult before became excitedly simple. And this other interesting thing happened, it became totally normal. Early on, there was a moment where I was updating the system. I pushed a deployment that had a bad variable or something.. suddenly I was flooded with messages. "Did I break it?" "What happened to GPT?" "Sassy chat went down!" A few minutes later the system was back up, but it was a reminder that this thing had become more than a cool idea, it had become a carburetor, vital to the efficient distribution of combustion driving the engine of the organization. I cannot imagine a world without electricity, just as much as now, I cannot remember a time where generative AI wasn't trivially accessible. The mass adoption of useful AI in my organization has a lot to do with my efforts in making it accessible and available, I will take that credit, but electricity without a lightbulb is just heated copper. Innovation is a team sport, where independent minds apply tools to solve problems, and when you give smart people better tools, they will solve the problems better. Mary does 20x more quantitative reports of customer sentiment 10x faster Kim finds holes in our staffing strategies she never would have found before Daniel writes code and gives the teams more valuable data analysis and yet, “It’s sort of like sediment of rocks. … You’re building up a mountain and you get to contribute your little layer of sedimentary rock to make the mountain that much higher, but no one on the surface, unless they have X-ray vision, will see your sediment." Applied innovation is a better normal, a higher mountain, a better view. Incredible in its ability to potentially inspire awe, but maybe even more awesome in the aspect that this thing which once never existed is now vital to the makeup of our understanding of our world. We are better, faster, and more capable than ever before, and it's perfectly normal. Experience Cloud Portals: Use Cases, Increasing User Adoption and Value, and Things to Keep in Mind On July 17th and 18th, the Higher Education Advisory Council convened at Smith College for its third annual knowledge-sharing event. During this gathering, we engaged in spirited discussions on various topics. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing a summary of the key points and highlights from our conversations. Participants from institutions including Smith College, University of Arizona, Cornell University, University of St. Thomas, Western Michigan University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, University of Denver, University of Oklahoma, and George Mason University contributed their insights and experiences regarding the implementation and management of Salesforce Experience Cloud portals. Use Cases: - Alumni and current student engagement through a dedicated network (Smith College). - Faculty early progress reports for students and event notifications (University of Arizona). - Health leave of absence management and academic concern submissions (Cornell University). - Admissions enrollment processing and alumni directory (University of St. Thomas). - IT case management and knowledge articles (Western Michigan University). - Faculty grade submission and validation (University of Oklahoma). - Appointment scheduling and student success tracking (University of Denver). Increasing User Adoption and Value: - Customize portal experiences based on audience types using dynamic content. - Integrate with existing content management systems like Drupal for seamless user experiences. - Leverage single sign-on (SSO) to provide a unified access experience. - Ensure consistent branding across all portal sites to align with campus standards. - Use tools like Mobile Publisher to extend the portal experience to mobile devices. Things to Be Aware of When Adopting Experience Cloud Portals: - Licensing can be complex and may require careful management, especially for users accessing multiple orgs. - Portal performance can degrade when serving multiple audience types, necessitating careful planning of dynamic content delivery. - Integration with external systems like LMS or Banner may require additional customization and maintenance. - Regular engagement through good design, valuable content, and consistent marketing is essential to drive portal usage and justify the investment. - Adopting tools like Omni Studio might be necessary to handle complex requirements that standard Experience Cloud capabilities may not support.

Now I am hearing this very often by CIO and similar CxO conversations, #GenAI is another tool in the toolbox. Like good process engineering, digital transformation, automation, RPA, cloud and AI/ ML , it is another tool. Don't start with the technology and look for the problem to solve. Be in the problem space , understand the problem and look for solution across people, process, technology and data. GenAI is a powerful tool but still does not meet all the ethical and compliance needs of the modern world, when trying to apply to all scenarios.
