Another great article David Ross - VUCA Strategist. Corporate Peacemaker! For me, leadership is primarily about listening and serving. I do believe in the value of a leadership structure, but not to command and control; rather to make a safe space for teams to operate within, knowing that there is experience to lean on and leaders to protect them by supporting a culture of experimentation and promoting their ideas and values within an organization.

Why is it still so hard to to create, design, build and launch products people love to use? (Two words: Executive Alignment) It took me years to understand this principle and even longer to make it a key part of my product leadership toolbox. Fortunately, you don't have to wait that long because the UX Researchers Guild is hosting an event this Thursday (Aug 15) featuring Tamara Adlin on this exact topic. I'm not one to endorse LinkedIn events often, but after following Tamara's work for some time, I can honestly say her experience and practical approach to helping product professionals advance their career is second to none. If you're a product leader, researcher or simply want to create better alignment between cross-functional teams & executive needs... Then you don't want to miss this event. 🗓 Mark your calendars! 🗓 https://lnkd.in/eshTB4Nc (Repost for others ♻️)

I'm dipping my toe into the world of writing by sharing thoughts and learnings about management in a new SubStack. This post explores how I like to approach problems I've never encountered before. I developed the ideas as a roadmap for getting started and building momentum. It's been incredibly useful over the years. Let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/gNhzpPrH

I often find myself trying to communicate how the depth, breadth and nuance of thoughtful, contextualized product design can create systemic ripples across the landscape of society, culture, and economy. The principle of larger effects and systems seems rather timely given the impacts and implications of the work we find ourselves in the weeds. What might mindful, thoughtful innovation look like? If we are disruptive, working from a place of care and positive intent, are we still able to see the larger picture and the possible ripples from decisions? There is a power differential in recognizing the effects on systems. We often hear things like “technology is not neutral” or “the victors write the history”. This may mean there are far-reaching implications of decisions and systemic impacts without the realization of unintended consequences. If we are seeking to consider equity within a product we must increase our awareness and research, design, develop and execute from a space of curiosity without weaponizing approaches based on moral codes, personal beliefs and misaligned values. What does “for good” look like in practice, and to whom is it good for? We are often reliant on dominant narratives and frame things as edge cases. Those on the “edges” are often perceived as more work than necessary, less important, or statistically insignificant. This leads whole human identities to be framed as outliers. These focused threads demonstrate how a product can drive change by reshaping perceptions and practices at both individual behaviours, choices, industry standards and cultural narratives. It’s about initiating change that can be sustained, leading to a reimagining of systems that have gone unchallenged. This guides us to examine the influence on social structures, economies, and ethical frameworks. A decolonization perspective asks us to critically examine how historical contexts have shaped products. Dismantling the inequities that are embedded within current systems, our journey begins in a world saturated with products designed without the richness of human difference in mind. The one-size-fits-all mentality prevails. Systems innovation would mean designing products that do not perpetuate colonial legacies but instead respect and uplift local knowledge, traditions, and needs. Who benefits from these innovations? Are these technologies accessible to all, or do they widen the digital divide? Do these innovations respect locality, or data sovereignty? Product equity must address global complexities, considering how a product fits into various cultural contexts and the impact on different communities. It's not just about doing no harm but actively doing good. Understanding balance—the need for steady iteration and the courage for radical change. We can build currents strong enough to redefine systems, rewrite narratives, and reshape these ecosystems. #ProductEquity #PrinciplesOfEquity #SystemsInnovation #SystemsThinking #Decolonization

I first heard of the "Cobra Farm" in Neel Doshi's "Primed To Perform" (thanks Erik Erichsen :)). It's the idea that if you measure something, you might not get the results that you think that measurement will bring. In software, you could probably make that idea even more rigid. You will almost always end up with a cobra farm for any metric you might try to leverage - save one. That's TBD. There's a single issue to watch out for - that folks aren't falling into old school cowboy coding (developing on prod, or just throwing code with no control out to the user). If you guard against that, TBD maturity (since it is a bit of a continuum) will give you a real indicator about the health of your practice. And if you probe your maturity, you'll quickly find actionable steps for improvement. For more on this - check out our latest podcast episode: https://lnkd.in/gm2uqJ-y

It was great to hear Robert Wong Julie Willem Angie McAllister, Ph.D. and Markus Kunesch on the recent episode of the @Ed-Technical podcast -- the first of a three-part series about how we're applying Google AI to our work in education and learning: https://lnkd.in/e7hQi6a2. This episode delves deep into LearnLM, how we're making Gemini tuned for pedagogy and how we're integrating this technology into our mainstream products to improve learning outcomes, and evolve how people learn on Google products. It explains inspiring new product ideas, and the steps we take across the company to understand and enhance the journey of learning in a responsible and innovative way. #LearnLM #AI #Education #Google

My KidsOutAndAbout.com weekly column today, The Human Algorithm, is resonating big-time with readers, so I'm reposting it here. It was inspired by a note I received from a teacher in Kansas City, Aaron Bratcher. (Thank you, Aaron! You see it did indeed make me think deep thoughts! 😊 ) Perhaps we all can adopt what readers are spontaneously calling "Aaron's Algorithm." https://lnkd.in/ggvbUQZa .......................................... Making mistakes is not only the way we learn, it's integral to living and breathing as humans. We all know this intellectually, but recently a Kansas City teacher made me see it through a different lens. Last month, during an intense period of preparation for our private and alternative education showcase, I sent a Milwaukee invitation to Kansas City school administrators by mistake... not once, but twice. I didn't realize it until after I’d hit "Send" for the second time, and quickly followed it with an apology and correction... the email's subject was <Argh!>. A few minutes later, I got a note from Aaron Bratcher, the lead instructor at GlenHaven Academy, saying, "No worries, Deb. Thank you for the warm reminder that there are organizations where these things are handled by actual breathing people and not simply by an algorithm!" See what he did there? Aaron had transformed my error into a reason for me to feel good. It reminded that wherever we look, the people we see are humans who also make mistakes... and that when these occasions arise, we can choose to connect rather than point fingers. Looking back, I wonder how different things might have been if, instead of pointing out my kids' errors in their early years, I had used those moments to acknowledge their value the way Aaron did with me; maybe they would fear mistakes less and recover from them more quickly. Fortunately, each day brings us a fresh slate on which to write our future, to practice being like Aaron the next time an excuse arises. We each have immense agency to add value to the world: Just look right and left and you'll find endless occasions to use Aaron's powerful algorithm for sprinkling grace and generosity. It’s truly as much a part of being “only human” as the mistakes themselves. —Deb

Since launching last Fall, its been incredible to see all the many workflows and integrations that companies are building with Lucid's Developer Platform. We've seen companies build automated processes and deeply linked templates that help with Sales, Marketing, Operations, and Engineering teams get the most out of Lucid. Come learn how to get started building from two of our engineers on the API teams who help engineers build these integrations every day.

THIS. Every time an article on EVs or alternative energy solutions is posted we see the same comments by the same people, who assume that everyone else is living the same way, in the same environments, and that the same constraints apply. I can charge at home. I live in an apartment. I have solar. I have no public charging access. I live in a city and commute using an EV daily. I live in a rural area and routinely drive 1,000 miles in the cold with a single 5-minute stop for gas. We really need to concentrate on understanding that there's not one single sole solution that works for everyone. But at the same time we need to recognize that our particular use case just might be an outlier... and that there's a good chance that a solution can be found that works for the majority of people. And that the world will move forward, regardless.

Last night Zoë Nation and I were guests on a Protex AI webinar facilitated by Dan Hobbs I've been experimenting with a new live audio transcription tool that doesn't require a bot to join the webinar. It's called Krisp - it doesn't record the conversation it just documents the transcript for summarisation. In the spirit of learning and sharing - here's the AI-generated summary from the webinar - the full webinar recording will be shared in the next 48 hours from the Protex Marketing Team... #SafetyTech #HOP 📝 Harnessing AI To Elevate Human And Organizational Performance In Safety Notes 🕞 Started at 10:00 PM on 13 Jun, lasted 1h Introduction and Overview Dan opens the webinar, welcoming participants and allowing time for latecomers to join. He acknowledges the regular attendees and introduces the topic of harnessing AI for human organizational performance in safety. Dan outlines the agenda, including an introduction to the HOP model, challenges in adopting HOP, integrating AI and computer vision into safety practices, as well as Q&A sessions throughout the webinar. Dan introduces Zoe and Cam from Australia as panellists with expertise in human factors engineering and health & safety. Zoe shares her background in applying theory to real-world scenarios while Cam discusses his work supporting organisations with data-driven approaches. Understanding Human Organizational Performance (HOP) Zoe explains that HOP principles stem from human factors concepts such as fallibility of people, contextual influence on behaviour, importance of learning from mistakes, response significance over blame-fixing culture. She emphasises a systems approach focusing on operational reality rather than idealised procedures. Zoe attributes growing interest in HOP to frustration over stagnant safety improvements across industries despite advancements. She also highlights alignment between psychological safety research by Amy Edmondson with principles of adaptive leadership driving interest towards embracing HOP concepts more effectively. Cam asked the question whether COVID-19 may have acted as a catalyst for organisations to declutter their processes due to necessity during challenging times. He speculates that it exposed inefficiencies within existing work practices prompting a re-evaluation towards more effective approaches aligned with HOP principles. Defining HOP There was a discussion about what constitutes HOP, with considerations for different interpretations and applications within organisations. The conversation revolved around applying human-centered thinking across problems rather than labelling it as HOP. REST OF THE SUMMARY CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS...

RE+ was excellent this year! My overall takeaway: credibility is key in our industry, and credibility comes from clarity and crisp execution. AI was less visibly present this year, reflecting the rediscovery that vendors should prioritize results rather than how they achieve them. Still, methods matter; use the right tool for the job, and be truthful about the tools you use. Long onboarding times plague our industry; the right mindset and tools help. SCADA and Asset Performance Management (APM) software are powerful together, and the ecosystem they operate in is flourishing, both within and outside PF. Large-format modules are increasingly available on the market. They look great on paper, but are likely to break at higher rates in practice, highlighting the disconnect between the field and the board room, and the difference between ground truth and cloud truth. Trust the people closest to the action, and give them a seat at the table. What were your main takeaways from RE+?

Truly mature design systems are almost always looking to have fewer components and less complexity at their core. Let composability and inheritance (systems of systems) build on top of a core foundation. There is a budding "ecosystem" model for design systems that have a maturity / adoption curve we should be able to model.
