One of the reasons I transitioned into #HR 8 years ago is because I wanted to empower people. I attempt to do this through many venues including sharing stories of inspiration. One of those venues occurred yesterday. I ordered a grill off of #Amazon and knew based upon the price it was going to have to be assembled. I have lived my entire life with amongst other #neurodivergent traits, #NVLD (nonverbal learning disability). My brain cannot reverse things, or understand abstract concepts. For example, the grill assembly instructions. Looking at the manual I saw scaled to page pictures that didn't match up with real life size. The instructions didn't say if there were multiple steps for one part, which to do first, and explicitly show how to perform each step. So I went to You Tube and watched a video, but still it didn't click. Then I saw the dreaded phrase, 30 minutes to install. I thought, how can you, the manufacturer, make that claim? This is a perfect example of the neurotypical way society operates that I've spoken about before. I sat down at 3:00 yesterday to set up the grill in preparation for my coven's celebration of the Summer Solstice (we call it Litha), this Saturday. Come 7:00 pm I had a fully assembled grill. I first built the base backwards, had to unscrew/unbolt all the parts and reassemble it. Then I had to attach the grill itself, and supporting shelves. And you know what? I had fun doing it! I was patient with myself throughout the entire process. I talked out loud (I am an auditory learner) what I thought I needed to do and it worked. For those who struggle with any kind of neurodivergence and repeat to themselves I can't do this (fill in whatever this is)... Stop! Maybe you can't do it presently, but in time I bet you can. Because what I think you're really saying is, I am ashamed, upset, afraid, or any other self sabotaging adjective because of my neurodivergent status. Neurodivergence is something to be proud of. This month I am celebrating Pride as a queer man. Because of my #neuroqueer intersectionality I am celebrating both being #queer and #neurodivergent. My neurodivergence and being queer are gifts that increase my empathy, creative solution decision making, and as my husband says, suffering leads to understanding, which leads to compassion. So this month and all year long, I am letting my neuroqueer freak flag fly and I encourage everyone who identifies to do the same.
