A study in perspectives on AV safety: a Waymo robotaxi approaches an intersection in San Francisco. Some other driver is doing "really fast donuts" in the intersection, and has been doing so long enough that the robotaxi rider looks up because of the smell of burning rubber entering the cabin. Robotaxi enters the intersection, then stops. The other driver halts and narrowly misses hitting the robotaxi (by perhaps a foot). The rider: "I can trust the Waymo, but I can't trust this driver". States that the other driver was upset but the robotaxi rider "shrugged, and pointed to the invisible driver." What ya' gonna do? It's a Waymo. "Still going to use Waymo." Presumed Waymo response to regulators and media: The human driver doing donuts was irresponsible. If there had been a crash it would have been the other driver's fault. (If I got this wrong would be happy to be corrected by Waymo. They have not commented as far as I know.) A broader safety engineering response: This is not the first time a robotaxi has encountered another car doing donuts in an intersection. In fact, a Cruise robotaxi was hit in a similar situation in March 2023 (SGO 30412-4960). From the description it seems there was plenty of warning this was happening. Why did the robotaxi not stop well clear of the intersection as a prudent human driver would have? Is Waymo monitoring SGO data and learning from what has been reported by other companies? Has Waymo included "other car doing donuts" in its hazard log? Did Waymo decide to ignore mitigation of this hazard for some reason? Will that change now that this has happened to Waymo instead of just Cruise? I'm glad in this case there was no injury, but there certainly could have been but for chance from a rare circumstance that is already known to have caused a crash. Being saved by the “grace of the Gods” is not a safety argument. I hope these questions are being asked and resolved by Waymo. But we won't know until the next donut incident. Jensen Huang co-founded NVIDIA in 1993 with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, driven by a vision to revolutionize computer graphics. Xscape Photonics Raises $57M to Advance ChromX Platform Xscape Photonics, HQ in NYC, has secured $57 million since it’s launch in 2022. Now they have raised an additional $44 million in a funding round led by IAG Capital Partners, with participation from Altair, Cisco Investments, NVIDIA, and others. The investment will accelerate the development of the company’s ChromX platform, a scalable and programmable photonics solution designed to meet the growing demands of AI data centers. Welcome to the fourth installment in our series introducing Cambridge Terahertz. In 30 seconds, I'll introduce you to a technology straight out of science fiction: Terahertz imaging. Imagine having x-ray vision without the health risks. That's the potential of Terahertz imaging, a technology that's had scientists buzzing for decades. As the sophisticated sibling of millimeter-wave imaging used in airport security, Terahertz imaging uses harmless radio waves to peer through solid objects. While 2D Terahertz "cameras" are already making strides, a vast untapped wealth of data and value exists in the third dimension, where 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘳 imaging brings a new level of insight. This technology doesn't just see surfaces - it penetrates and maps entire volumes. Think of it as a hybrid between lidar and x-ray:  • Creates detailed 3D maps of environments  • Tracks moving objects  • Penetrates materials like clothing, packaging, and even walls Terahertz frequencies offer a sweet spot: high enough resolution to detect small objects, yet low enough to pass through many materials. While research labs have produced 𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘴 3D Terahertz radar images, these setups typically involve complex/expensive optical arrangements and moving parts, confining them to controlled lab environments. The key to practical Terahertz radar imaging? The phased array antenna. A technology more than a century old, the humble phased array has become the backbone of modern wireless systems such as 5G, automotive radar, and even Starlink. At Terahertz frequencies, they make perfect sense. Since it's challenging to build a single powerful transmitter or receiver due to the "Terahertz Gap", why not combine many less powerful ones into an array? However, creating Terahertz phased arrays has shown to be exceptionally difficult, especially when considering the stringent requirements needed by many real-world applications. Once again, promising technology remained trapped in the lab. As part of my PhD work at MIT, we tackled these challenges head-on. We developed vast improvements in Terahertz antenna arrays in silicon CMOS, leading to (what we believe was) the world's first solid-state Terahertz imaging radar, as featured in TechCrunch. At Cambridge Terahertz, drawing upon our learnings from MIT, we’re developing high-performance solid-state Terahertz imaging radars to unlock Terahertz technology's potential for real-world applications. Built in silicon, our solution offers unprecedented levels of cost-effectiveness, scalability, and integration. Our impact is beginning to take shape. Meet Ted, our Terahertz dummy. Here's what our VP of Products Bob Beachler highlights in the EE Times article about the Arm & Untether AI collaboration... “What we’re seeing is that a lot of our automotive customers are trying to figure out ways to differentiate their hardware and make it better than an off the shelf system from Mobileye, Qualcomm or Nvidia,” “With the growing amount of AI in automotive infrastructure, they are looking at how to solve this problem with scalable solutions that go from level 2+ all the way to full autonomy.” This type of system would require a scalable CPU architecture with the option for multiple AI accelerators, which will be provided by the new Arm-Untether partnership. #autonomous #driving #powerefficient #atmemory #ai #compute #acceleration

The Cerebras IPO looking to break up the NVIDIA monopoly might be successful in the short-term for an IPO pop, but long term will likely fail. NVIDIA’s dominance doesn’t come just from its chip but from the CUDA software that is the de facto standard and can take advantage of chip architecture improvements. No wonder why 87% of Cerebras’ revenue is from the Middle East. The people buying it aren’t the engineers using it. https://lnkd.in/ePRqdFpt

Qualcomm wants to buy all of Intel! A couple of decades ago, such a statement would have sounded blasphemous given that Qualcomm, at that point, was tiny relative to a trustly gargantuan Intel. This goes to show the nature of digital disruption enabled by the rise of mobile consumer devices at scale and, more specifically, smartphones where Qualcomm is one of the world's dominant chip companies. However, this play is not to simply take advantage of a much slimmed down Intel, but rather to give Qualcomm tenterhooks into the burgeoning space of chips for data centres in large enterprises and cloud companies that are racing to build and massively grow their artificial intelligence capabilities, and offerings, in the market place. Put simply, Qualcomm seeks to diversify its offerings from mobile offerings like smartphones, tablets, and laptops to becoming an end to end purveyor of all things chips across the entire spectrum. A Big Hairy Audacious Goal, also known as a 'BHAG' is in the offing. When I met Surjyanil (Tony) Chowdhury and Stephen Barron at NVIDIA GTC in San Jose this year, what they showed me in CesiumJS was amazing. They were bringing fire and weather data from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), NOAA, and ADS-B flight trackers and combining them in CesiumJS. All on top of Cesium World Terrain and Bing Maps Aerial imagery streamed as 3D Tiles with Cesium ion. Their idea is to give wildfire incident commanders and staff an accurate 3D map to visualize and analyze active wildland fires, track flights of the air assets doing detection, monitoring, and suppression, and then incorporate critical weather information, such as temperature, humidity, and wind. It makes sense they're using Cesium software - CesiumJS is built for interactive web apps and streaming massive amounts of data. It's lightweight and performant, which is vital for users receiving rapid updates in the field. A couple months after GTC, Steve demo'd it to the Cesium user community at Cesium's office in Philly during our inaugural 3D Technical Exchange Meeting (3D TEM). Just beautiful. Their next ambitious goal is to detect near-real-time fire perimeters from imagery using Lockheed's AI tools, and reflect them on top of Cesium World Terrain every 15 to 20 minutes. The approach is to refine the images prior to generating the near-real-time fire perimeters from the satellite imagery.
