Design Principles for Generative AI Applications A team of researchers from IBM has published six valuable design principles for designing visual generative AI tools. For each principle, they have selected several implementation strategies and successful examples. Principles: - Design responsibly. Design for the user by understanding their needs and pain points rather than prioritising the technology or its capabilities - Design with mental models in mind. Generative AI presents new challenges for users, so it's important to communicate to users through mental models how the system works and how individual actions affect it. - Calibrate user trust. It is important that people check AI outputs for inaccuracies or unacceptable results and treat them critically. Be honest about the limitations and weaknesses of the system. - Take into account the variability of generative AI results. Help users select what they need or adjust a query - Provide opportunities for human and AI co-creation. Add more controls during generation so the user can enhance the results and create exactly what they need - Take into account the imperfections of the AI. Effective dashboard design improves UX by carefully managing trade-offs. We love Benjamin Bach’s article on the inevitable design tradeoffs in dashboard creation (via Vitaly Friedman). He focuses on four key parameters: screenspace, the number of pages, data abstraction, and interactivity.  Balancing these parameters requires careful consideration, as optimizing one often stresses the others. The goal is to minimize stress by finding an optimal balance, which involves making informed decisions about which parameters to adjust based on the specific context and requirements of the dashboard. Effective use of screenspace ensures that information is easily accessible without overwhelming the user. Designers must balance the amount of information displayed with the dashboard's readability and usability. 🧪 Gather feedback on different layout designs to determine the most effective use of screen space. User testing can reveal which layouts maximize readability and accessibility. Number of Pages ↳ The number of pages refers to the division of information across multiple screens. Using more pages can help organize data and reduce clutter, but it may also require users to navigate between pages, potentially complicating the user experience. 🧪 Test various multi-page designs with first-click tests to assess how easily they can navigate between pages to provide insights on user preferences and pain points. Data Abstraction ↳ Data abstraction deals with the level of detail presented. Simplifying data through abstraction can make complex information more digestible and highlight key insights. However, too much abstraction might omit critical details, while too little can overwhelm users with excessive information. 🧪 Test different levels of data abstraction to see which versions users find most informative yet comprehensible. This helps in balancing detail and simplicity. Interactivity ↳ Interactivity involves the degree to which users can interact with the dashboard elements. High interactivity allows users to explore data dynamically but can also increase complexity and learning curve. Balancing interactivity with usability ensures that the dashboard remains user-friendly while providing valuable insights. 🧪 Implement click-tests to make data-driven decisions to optimize these design trade-offs, enhancing your dashboard's overall effectiveness and user satisfaction. #GenerativeAI is disrupting marketing the way #Catia disrupted mechanical engineering a few decades ago. But it's the human creativity, enginuty, and authenticity that create "the next great thing."
