Eric Schmidt's recent interview at Stanford University got lot of attention due to his comments on Google's WFH policy. He mentioned Google is effectively slipping in AI because of their WFH policy. There were lot of people taking sides in this conversation and bashing WFH vs In-office. I would have expected his interview to start healthy discussion around this topic rather than continuing the long running debate on this. Unfortunately, we live in an environment where everyone need to take sides rather than finding positives on both sides. I have worked both in WFH environment (which everyone is forced to during the Covid lockdown) and in-office environment equally over my career so want to write my thoughts on this topic. I have benefitted immensely during the initial days of my career working closely with team in office and having face to face interaction. It certainly offers easier collaboration and provides opportunity for spontaneous discussion(water cooler/tea time). The thing I hated most about working in office is the commute time and the associated stress it adds to the daily life. If you don’t have a team or leader that understands the necessity to have meetings you might be stuck in unproductive/unwanted meetings while in office.    I enjoy the clear separation between work and personal life offered in the office work environment, where you have the chance to log off after your work. Unless you set clear timing/work space in WFH, it is really difficult to separate the two and end up mixing both. WFH offers better work-life balance since there is no commute time and can plan your day better.   But I personally think Hybrid model offers the best of both world and might be what the future workplace would look like, I doubt if we are ever going back to full time in office model or fully remote Covid model. I certainly enjoy the days I am in office and enjoy collaborative discussion with my team. I plan my week to maximize collaboration while in office and do more of my individual planning work during the days I work from home.    I have benefitted from working in all the models and each offers valid arguments to be the de-facto model for a company. Every company/team should try out the different models and choose what works for them. I have seen successful companies in each of the working categories, it is because of the team and the model they choose which worked for them.   It would be great if we have productive discussions to understand why someone chooses a particular model and better understand why it works for a particular team or a company so we can learn from it.

"Aligning Strategy, Collaborating Success: The Surprising Secret to Revenue Growth" Imagine you're in a boardroom. As a CMO, you are discussing along with your peers and your CEO, the ins and outs of your progress and organization's strategy. The term "collaboration" echoes throughout the room, everyone nodding in agreement about its importance and the need for improvement. But hold on a moment—did you know that recent research from Gartner reveals a shocking truth? Businesses heavily focused on collaboration are 37% less likely to meet their yearly revenue targets (see link below). Surprised? At first, perhaps. But as someone with extensive experience as both a leader/practitioner and CMO advisor, I've come to realize that this finding underscores a crucial point—we mustn't overlook the importance of alignment. Alignment and collaboration are close concepts, but they’re not the same. Let’s break down some key differences: 1.     Scope o   Organisations with strong alignment garner cross-functional agreement on business objectives, cascading this alignment across growth strategies, processes, activities, and resource investments. In contrast, strong collaboration excels in driving coordination and teamwork for specific tasks or initiatives. 2.     State o   Alignment is perpetual, extending across functions, departments, and levels. It's a continuous process, responsive to internal and external triggers that necessitate revisiting decisions to maintain alignment. Collaboration, however, is typically project-focused, with a defined lifespan corresponding to specific initiatives. 3.     Impact:  o   Alignment shapes the organization at macro and micro levels, influencing how strategies are formulated and operationliased, an organisation’s operating model, culture, and overall performance. In contrast, collaboration impacts individual projects, enhancing operational efficiency, innovation, and teamwork within specific contexts. In essence, in my view, alignment guides strategic and operational direction, while collaboration propels projects or initiatives within this broader framework. While collaboration may seem "easier" to pursue, the "harder" path of alignment often yields the most rewarding and impactful outcomes. As we all navigate the complexities of organizational success, both alignment and collaboration play vital roles, but we should not overlook their differences. Not every tech partner is a GTM partner, and that's OK! A tech partner can be broken out into two primary segments, a go-to-market partner or an integration partner. Yes, a tech partner can be both to some degree, but to ensure you are allocating the right resources and tracking the right metrics, it is important to segment by primary focus. A Ghoulish treat for Halloween … A synopsis from a recent Waypoint HCS client conversation on the evolution of the Voice AI market. There is something intrinsically human about connecting with someone by talking with them. Voice is such a powerful medium. It conveys content, intonation, emotion, and even individualistic personality all at the same time. Remember those clunky old phone systems? ("Press 1 for..." 🤖) Back in the 80s and 90s, voice tech was like Frankenstein's monster – impressive for its time, but ultimately limited. Then came the internet boom, and we all got hooked on emails, texts, and chats. A ton of investment went into this Witch’s 🧹 Cauldron of capabilities. Online scheduling, Text instead of Voice. Rightly so as we had a whole generation that became more connected to non-Voice engagement. The world cracked open with the advent of OpenAI and ChatGPT. There were a number of companies working along similar lines with large language models. We went from very basic Voice interactions to rapid advancement in Voice and Intelligence. Today we find ourselves in a place where Voice AI almost feels like there is a 🧙‍♂️ behind the curtain crafting “magic.” Whether it is the new Voice capabilities from OpenAI or Google or Voice specific companies like Gridspace and Bland. Voice quality is advancing as fast as the LLMs underpinning them. Voice Agents are now truly conversational and not limited to very scripted and exact phrase captures. The optionality has exploded from full stack providers like Gridspace to market specific companies such as Anaphero (YC W24), Penciled (YC W24), and Syllable in the healthcare space. Where do we go from here? 📣 I strongly believe that every health system should have a Voice AI strategy. 🎙️ I believe Voice is going to swing back to the preferred means of communication (not in a vacuum but preferred) and scale Voice but simply adding people is not feasible. 🎯 I think increasingly the differentiation is going to be driven by Voice companies that excel at solving use cases, not just "build anything" models. There will continue to be a need at the large organizations for a platform play but I suspect most of the healthcare market is going to want to “turn on” voice versus build. Don’t be tricked this Halloween 🎃 . Pick your voice partner wisely so that it is a Treat this year and the next. Recognize the speed at which this market is accelerating and make sure you have optionality worth the underlying capabilities so that you don’t get the Beetlejuice scared out of you. There is major disconnect in the GTM (go to market) industry. Those people who are trying to integrate marketing, sales, and CX professionals into one cohesive strategy and set of motions. I read the GTM Manifesto from a consortium of experts and it has some major blindspots. The founders behind the consortium are industry celebrities Sam Jacobs (Pavilion), 🐶 Jacco van der Kooij (Winning by Design), and Sangram Vajre (GTM Partners). The manifesto lays out the different motions of inbound-led, outbound-led, product-led, event-led, community-led, and yes, partner-led. It fails to recognize that as every company is trying to become a platform for their buyer (and succeed inside other major platforms), that the word platform itself is synonymous with partnerships. Platforms are measured by product integrations inside the 7-layer stacks customers are building, services relationships inside the 7 partners that surround the buyer before, during, and after the transaction, and the digital marketplace functionality that brings it all together. The slide below shows a very linear, simplistic view of the world that we may have drawn in 1999. Visit a website and download content? That is (if a company is successful) one of 28 measurable moments a buyer goes through in a B2B purchase. The other 27 moments? Likely partner driven. How much of a company's market SAM (serviceable market) shows up in their pipeline? The delta is those deals where 100% of buyer activity happens outside their inbound/outbound reach. Heck, even Salesforce in their latest State of Sales report showed that 89% of salespeople are using partners every day. Oh, and 58% of the remaining 11% plan to in the next 12 months because that is how they are making their numbers in this tough environment. No mention of that below. Retaining and enriching customers in subscription and consumption models? Those 7 services and technology partners who are provisioning, implementing, integrating, and driving managed services every 30 days forever are critical. Let's forget research for a second. The most successful B2B companies in the world - the ones who have achieved platform status and $100 billion+ valuations are partner-led companies (Go check out the list for yourself - https://lnkd.in/e75Q2Qkm). Listen to their CEO's kick off their major conferences and talk about 100% commitment to be partner-led. Now take Gen AI. Every CEO who is leading in this era talks partner ecosystems. For example, Microsoft last week in Chicago talk about deep partnerships with OpenAI, NVIDIA, Snowflake, and a host of others making up a $4 trillion market TAM. It behooves everyone in marketing, sales, CX, and product to understand who the 7 trusted services partners are inside each of the customers in your TAM. Understanding who the other 6 technology companies are that will form the outcome/solution the buyer is after. We are in the "surround" moment of GTM. Winners and losers will be defined here.

AgTech Ecosystem - I have posted about the great experience that was the All In Summit at UCLA a couple of weeks ago. There was a lot of value that was hard to get if you were not at the event - catching up with old friends and making new ones happens best live. But there's a lot of the event that you can get value from, including all of the panels from the event being live on the YouTube channel below. Here are the panels - full recordings from each are live on demand in the channel: Elon Musk Peter Thiel JD Vance John Mearsheimer and Jeffrey Sachs Megyn Kelly Sergey Brin Travis Kalanick Marc Benioff Michael Ovitz Tekedra Mawakana Bari Weiss If you look at the views for these panels, the top two panels are Elon (955k views) and Mersheimer/Sachs (918k views). It will be interesting to watch the view numbers for each of the panels and the overall All-In Summit channel continue to grow. Bill Gurley's presentation on regulatory capture from last year's All In Summit has certainly stayed relevant and part of the conversation much of the last year. My guess is that some of these panels will achieve the same result over the next year. The All-In hosts suggested that they could get 50M views on YouTube and X from the recorded panels viewed on-demand. That would be impressive - not long ago J-Cal was bragging about the 50M annual views that the All-In pod was getting. Now the event panels could get that much traffic over the next few months. These are some of the brightest minds and biggest thinkers in tech, policy, and trends. It's awesome that it's all in one place and available on demand for everyone.
