The Institute of Design (ID) at Illinois Tech recently released “Taking Responsibility in the Age of AI: The 2024 Institute of Design Report.” This report was informed by interviews with 29 design leaders, who identified five key challenges that other design leaders need to address for the field to remain relevant and effective. But how does a disruptive technology affect design leadership - and the design capabilities that activate value? Why search in keyword and filter world doesn't match prompts in an AI world: The system finding exactly what you expect based on syntax is not the same as predicting what you expect based on natural language and data sampling. This is an article I wrote 13 years ago, and it still holds true today. It was in response to someone criticizing American Airlines and redesigning the airline ticket, which alone is a challenging experience. There are all kinds of reasons why the experience isn't what we want it to be, many of them very legitimate reasons. We have to practice empathy and compassion because we aren't in their shoes. There are always adversaries to design systems. I love this article by Sara Fazzini outlining some of the common situations we run into in the world of #DesignSystems. Two points I wanted to "yes, and..." that are often used to reject the use of design systems. Design systems aren't fixed. They are mutable. They must evolve. Changes ought to be thoughtful and exceptionally intentional to serve broad needs. But they also aren't unchangeable laws of the digital universe. Design systems do limit creativity? Sort of. It depends on how you think about it. Design systems that are built with an atomic structure using tokens, base elements, components, and patterns can be combined in endless ways. It typically takes work to learn how to be creative with a design system. By their nature there are built in "limitations", but creativity ought to thrive when given the full power of a design system. Figma’s ConFig ’24 released several new features that caused many to continue to sing their praises. However, there is a trend their business model that is problematic. New features are initially available to all in beta. Once the feature goes into production, there will be a charge to use the new feature. Figma seems to be building an a la cart feature menu creating a nickel and dime growth strategy. The problem is that Figma has already surpassed the exorbitant pricing of Adobe products. Has Figma considered the full spectrum of their user base? While some enterprises may be able to float that price tag (For managers, it still can be a hard sell for budget approval), small businesses and independent designers will find the cost to be challenging or prohibitive. While Figma may generate some initial profit, it may not work in the long-term once the romance is gone.

Artificial Intelligence is about to make mincemeat of the current practice of Information Architecture and completely change how we look at technology. However, Information Architects and other UX disciplines remain essential in bringing balance to the Force. As Ombudsmen of Innovation, it is our job to reconcile the needs of humanity and the capabilities and costs of AI and help ensure AI is used to empower and elevate humanity, not to enslave it to its basest instincts. I recently read Matt Scharpnick’ piece on UX Design for Generative AI: Balancing User Control and Automation (Boston Consulting Group (BCG)) - inspired by it, I had the following thoughts… The allure of Generative AI lies in its potential to augment creative workflows by generating content from basic input. Platforms like Udio and Suno demonstrate this by transforming ideas into songs in seconds, offering a launchpad for casual creators. However, professional settings require precision and control. Designers face the challenge of balancing user influence with the inherent unpredictability of these models. This becomes more crucial with the shift from text-based models to complex multi-modal systems (e.g., image and music generation). DALL-E and Midjourney exemplify contrasting approaches to UX in image generation. DALL-E prioritises simplicity and speed with a text-based interface, while Midjourney offers greater control through UI buttons and text commands. Music creation showcases the evolution of UX design in Generative AI. This iterative collaboration unlocks possibilities but achieving exact specifications remains a challenge. The key to unlocking the full potential of Generative AI lies in striking a balance between showcasing the model's strengths and providing users with precise control over their creative vision. As these tools mature, they will become integral to creative processes across all levels of expertise. Continuous innovation is vital for crafting interaction patterns that cater to a diverse range of use cases, from spontaneous exploration to meticulous professional workflows. Generative AI is a nascent technology with vast room for exploration. Interfaces that empower users to define their creative direction with precision will unlock their true potential. One of the most interesting UX research projects a #uxdesign er can do is presenting his/her own case studies. I've given a Walmart Health telehealth case study now, three times. Each time the presentation gets shorter, punchier and more compelling. The more you tell the story, the better it gets. The more fun it gets. The more exciting the story feels. Over time you anticipate where the punch lines are. The a-ha moments. And you quickly learn where they aren't. The best way to learn how to tell your case study stories is to practice. Wanna help me?
