Surgeon General Vivek Murthy talks about the need for a "whole-of-society approach" to advancing social connection. We've tried to heed that call in our work at Einhorn Collaborative, supporting a broader range of efforts that engage actors across sectors. That includes: Projects like Team Up to enlist large national civic organizations with a presence in local communities to help people build connection across difference through service. Research groups like Building H to measure the impact of products on consumers’ health and urge companies to do better to improve social connection and other health outcomes. Initiatives like Human Connections AI to bring together social connection experts with technologists to puzzle through how AI companions can be designed to enhance and not degrade human relationships. Another project that has helped us explore a facet of the whole-of-society approach is the Connective Tissue Framework, which puts forward a range of recommendations for how government – especially at the local level – can create the structural conditions and everyday opportunities for people to experience healthy connection. This week, OpenAI announced "OpenAI for Nonprofits." Sure, it's nice to see nonprofits acknowledged, but these programs have become a major pet peeve of mine. Let me tell you why. First, they rarely go further than surface-level benefits. The main (or only) offer is usually a discount on the cost of the service. In the case of OpenAI for Nonprofits, it's $5 off per month per user for their ChatGPT Teams plan (when purchased annually) and 50% off ChatGPT Enterprise. Lest we forget, OpenAI already offers a free version of ChatGPT. If a nonprofit is strapped for cash, they've likely already gone that route. Secondly, they require an application process that often omits many types of nonprofits. In the case of OpenAI, academic, medical, religious, and governmental institutions are not eligible. Once you are accepted and go to check out, the purchase flow is usually confusing and doesn't show the discount right away, as is the case with OpenAI. Third, the discount typically only covers some of the company's products. In the case of OpenAI, their discount only applies to paid versions of ChatGPT and not their API product. The mostpotentl and advanced applications of OpenAI's LLMs—the kind nonprofits could use to go beyond productivity enhancements and advance their core missions—require API usage. This signals to me—true or not—that they don't think nonprofits are serious about advanced and custom applications of generative AI. The best case scenario is when a SaaS company recognizes that nonprofits are willing to pay for quality software and views them as a market to pursue, not a box-to-check or a PR moment to capture. In the case of a CRM, this means preloading terminology, fields, and objects that make sense for the work nonprofits do. And in the case of a leading generative AI platform, it means committing, first and foremost, to building AI in an ethical way that doesn't jeopardize the difficult work that's been done and the progress that's been made (think: the spread of misinformation). It also means genuinely partnering with nonprofits to develop custom uses of their models to solve urgent societal challenges. How about a nonprofit tech and agency partner network, AI grants, and hackathon challenges for the greater good—all sponsored by OpenAI? Finally, it means formalizing and prioritizing efforts to address root causes and inequities and building features and functionality into the core product to "walk the walk." Don't get me wrong: a financial discount can provide some relief when budgets are small and getting smaller. But it feels like little more than a handout. If big tech companies actually want to help nonprofits achieve their missions, they shouldn't treat them as charity cases but instead empower them with purpose-built tools and specialized support. Let's think harder and go deeper to reimagine what a "nonprofit program" can and should be.

Is the use of AI-generated grant proposals or development projects the next internal conflict in fundraising? In the last few months, I've already heard non-grant writing fundraisers tell their colleagues "all you need is Chat GPT in order to write a grant proposal" and "AI can write our development plan." Meanwhile, trained grant professionals know there are more nuances to consider than just putting your information into a program and utilizing the received information. It will be interesting to see how this discussion plays out in fundraising.

I am constantly talking about the need to build “relational infrastructure” - but haven’t ever really defined what that means exactly. I'm in a lot of conversations these days where someone inevitably says: "Can't AI just do it?" So, needless to say, I am tracking these conversations very closely. And even IF AI could do the work of everyday humans and the philanthropic world responded positively, is that the "right" thing to do? These are the questions keeping me up these days. According to the study below, 31% of respondents in a 1K+ U.S. donor study said they would be less likely to donate to charities that used AI. I think as the technology becomes more familiar, that number will decrease.
