Check out the important brief by Janet Ranganathan from the World Resources Institute on "E-liabilities vs. GHG Protocol Approaches to Emissions Reporting: What you Need to Know". It's a careful and well reasoned analysis and moves beyond the "either/or" tone of some of the dialogue to date. We need multiple tools in our #GHGaccountingtoolbox - including balance sheet carbon accounting - to get the job done. The critical importance of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) Protocol is not lessened by the existence of alternative approaches to emissions reporting. Over the 3+ years that #SB253 made its way through a highly-contested legislative process, two hallmarks of the policy were reporting in conformance with the #GHGProtocol and the inclusion of #scope3. We required the use of the GHG Protocol because it is the global leading standard and the throughput across all emerging mandatory reporting regimes. It has not only stood the test of time but it has continued to develop to meet the needs of a rapidly changing corporate reporting landscape. If we think back to 2020, we were mired in an “alphabet soup” of reporting frameworks. The common refrain from companies and investors was that we needed harmonization. In Bangladesh, the magnitude of textile waste is staggering. Annually, 500,000+ MT of waste is produced, presenting a significant environmental challenge. A large portion of this consists of blended textiles containing two or more types of fibers, highlighting a pressing industry demand for technologies capable of recycling such complex textile waste. #Chemicalrecycling presents the potential for closed loop recycling for blended textile waste and enhances our prospects of addressing the fashion industry's challenging waste issue. UNIDO-led #SWITCH2CE ("Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains") project intends to set up an enabling ecosystem in Bangladesh for local textile circularity capacities. This Earth Day, we stand at a critical juncture as we confront the daunting triple crisis of climate change, nature loss, and escalating pollution and waste. The theme for 2024, "Planet vs. Plastics," underscores the pressing need to rethink our consumption and production patterns, which are driving us toward potentially irreversible environmental destruction. With humanity now using resources at a rate that would require almost two Earths to sustain, our environmental overdraft is alarmingly high. The staggering rate of species extinction and the doubling of global plastic waste since the early 2000s only add to the urgency of this crisis. Environmental monitoring and early warning systems for the environment are more crucial than ever. They offer a beacon of hope by providing valuable data that can guide our decisions and strategies. For example, the SDG indicator 6.3.2 reveals the depth of global capacity gaps in managing water quality, directing us toward necessary improvements in new knowledge for policy. While we cannot monitor our way out of crises such as freshwater degradation, air pollution, or our ocean health, the insights gained from robust environmental monitoring are invaluable. They help us understand impacts and shape effective management responses. Yet, many nations still lack access to critical environmental data, hampering their ability to protect biodiversity and prevent further ecological damage. Let's leverage the power of environmental monitoring and early warning for the environment approach to foster early actions that are informed and strategic, enhancing the Sustainable Budgeting Approach (SBA) and shifting investment towards nature-positive solutions. On this Earth Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development and to nurturing a planet that can sustain future generations. Many of my North American corporate clients have been exploring how they can enhance their materiality assessments to better meet stakeholders' demands for improved sustainability disclosures, including investors and customers that are subject to #EU #Taxonomy and #CSRD and #ESG raters and disclosure frameworks (CDP EcoVadis UN Global Compact Network USA CoP). An excellent approach is to combine IFRS Foundation Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1-S2, SASB) and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards to conduct a double (impact and financial) materiality assessment. Behind these meticulously crafted documents lies an unseen force: external consultants. Their expertise not only aids in data collection but also in shaping narratives that resonate with the public, ensuring accessibility and understanding. However, despite the growing prominence of sustainability reports, the lack of mandatory external assurance remains a prevalent issue. Many regulatory frameworks worldwide do not mandate independent evaluation, leaving room for what is commonly termed as "greenwashing." Greenwashing occurs when companies selectively disclose information to portray a superficial image of sustainability, often neglecting less flattering aspects. Royal society article summary: If properly implemented, NbS can support human adaptation to climate change in three different ways. First, NbS can reduce exposure to the immediate impacts of climate change. Second, NbS can reduce social sensitivity to climate impacts by supporting diversification of sources of food. This is particularly important in lower income nations where dependency on nature for food and income is high. Third, NbS can reduce vulnerability to climate impacts by building adaptive capacity through the process of designing, implementing and managing nature-based interventions. Ultimately, however, the effectiveness of NbS for adaptation can only be meaningfully understood at a local level. Research shows that effectiveness depends on many local biophysical, ecological and socioeconomic factors. Climate change adaptation, water use and biodiversity have one important thing in common: Locality. As climate change mitigation is a global effort and No. 1 priority we cannot neglect the others.
