Southern California Edison (SCE) signed two power purchase agreements totaling 320 MW with Fervo Energy in the largest-ever PPAs for geothermal. These massive deals show utilities' increasing demand for non-fossil electricity and a fully decarbonized grid: SCE had to procure 1,000 MW of non-weather-dependent renewables, because of a mandate from the California Public Utilities Commission. So that's a big moment for utility-scale geothermal. At the on-site scale, I've got my eye on the New York's biggest geothermal residential project going up in Brooklyn right now. Great to see these sorts of projects going online -- we gotta do more of what works, and invest in the rest. Software alone will not change the way the global economy powers itself. #energy #climatetech

California continues to lead the way in renewable energy! The State of California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved five major clean energy projects submitted by Southern California Edison (SCE). These include three solar power projects totaling 525 MWac and two geothermal projects from Fervo Energy, which represent the largest geothermal power purchase agreements globally. The solar projects, owned by 174 Power Global LLC, will be coupled with energy storage and have an AC capacity factor of just over 36%. In contrast, the geothermal facilities boast a capacity factor of over 82%, significantly enhancing energy reliability. These initiatives are crucial for meeting California's mid-term reliability goals of 3.8 GW by 2036 and reducing emissions to 25 million metric tons of CO2e by 2035. We’re excited that the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas recently welcomed news that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is making strides toward a cleaner, more sustainable future by proposing modifications to the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). The changes will increase methane capture and promote a broader range of clean fuels. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) recently issued a decision that sets timelines for the state’s three largest investor-owned utilities to complete customer energization projects. Energization is the process of connecting electrification projects—such as electric vehicle charging equipment—to the grid so that we can make use of our clean energy technologies. By setting timelines to complete energization projects, the CPUC decision recognizes that the state’s clean energy transition can’t happen without the timely integration of electrification projects to the grid. IREC has been actively engaged in the decision’s proceedings and contributed to the decision’s results.
