Our talent were out in force at last night’s Atlanta Falcons vs. Kansas City Chiefs game, and if you’re a brand or league, this is why that matters: The NFL is the undisputed champion of TV programming—it’s not even close. So why are the NFL and its teams partnering with #creators for big moments? The answer is cultural relevancy. While the #NFL owns 98% of the top 30 most-watched programs (2023), creators aren't there to impact the 2%. What the NFL is after is something deeper: becoming a part of the kitchen-table conversation. That’s where real relevancy is earned, and creators are the key to driving that. Dear brands: this is such a core idea that I repeat it just about every time we talk with a client such as yourself. Who is the audience you are trying to evangelize/convert? What can you offer them in terms of information/insight/entertainment that they won't get anywhere else? It helps answer the obvious other question - why would anyone want to spend time with this show in a time of peak distraction economy? What would listeners value? We don't do many RFPs partially because of this - in the real world of people choosing what to listen to - only a brilliantly niche-focussed creative will punch through. When you get on a call with many marketing analysts and data folks, they know their target audience. We don't, so an RFP (even with good intel shared under an NDA) still makes whatever we pitch a total shot in the dark. Usually, when people come to us, they like the kind of shows we make; they ask us to design one for their customers. Sort of like a nice flower shop - we can make the bouquet if you tell us the occasion. You tell us if the recipient likes roses, lilies or baby's breath. Our unique quality at Antica Productions is that we mostly make shows for mainstream networks and streamers, so if you want (and can afford) the equivalent quality of a CBC/BBC/Audible show, you come to us because that's our bread and butter. Other agencies are more competitive on price or offer subject matter expertise or killer marketing chops. You'll know what's best for you. Working with networks and streamers over the years, they have the same fundamental issue as brands- they want to reach women 18-24 or men 25-54. But with all their expertise and data, their shows bomb more often than they hit - even with motivated creatives who mostly make shows as a calling, not because it's a paycheque. I've sweated blood and worked with some of the most talented people in the TV and film world, but I've only made one colossal hit and a bunch of honourable mentions. And more than a few total misses. Way more. Total dollars spent on my shows and films since I started 30 years ago - probably now more than $50 million. Maybe almost $100 million. Those are tough odds. Maybe 1 or two in ten? Why? It's a difficult game because the investment requires we get millions of people to watch. But in brand podcasting, the marketing team has deep insight into their customers and potential customers and can MAKE A SHOW just for them. It might be just a few hundred people if you're selling passenger jets or private islands. It's a great rejigging of the odds in your favour, and it's why so many brand pods seem to do relatively well. For us, 80% or more of our shows return for multiple years. We've been lucky with clients who know their audience and need help designing the "gift." And, looking at our colleagues and competitors that seems to be true for our little industry as a whole. “We continue to see strong momentum in our podcast business” - Bob Pittman during the iHeartMedia earnings call this morning. Podcast revenue was $105m for Q2, up 8%, and overall revenue was $929m, up 1%, beating estimates. Unsurprisingly, radio revenue continues to decline while podcasting continues to be the highest growth opportunity for iHeart and other more traditional audio companies. Over the last two years, radio revenue has declined 4.3%, while podcasting revenue has grown 8.5%… and it’s not slowing down. The story here is pretty straightforward. Recent survey results from MediaVillage.org's The Myers Report are helping to get a clearer glimpse of advertising spend in 2025, with connected television (CTV), streaming, and over the top video (OTT) projected to see the most growth. “With 24% of respondents indicating a significant increase and 51% noting moderate growth, CTV/Streaming/OTT Video continues to lead as a top growth category,” the 40th annual report found. “This trend aligns with eMarketer’s projections, which estimate that digital video ad spending will grow by 13% in 2025, driven largely by consumer migration to streaming platforms.” In the survey of 3,500 advertising and media decision-makers, that category outranked first-party data-based decisions, which 21% expected to see significant growth and 43% expected moderate growth, followed by influencer media, digital video, social media, diverse-owned/operated media, retail/commerce media, and programmatic. “Programmatic advertising sees sustained interest, with 15% reporting significant increases,” the report says. “Automated ad buying continues to offer efficiencies and audience targeting capabilities that remain attractive for brands.” #advertising #digitaladvertising #advertisingoutlook #advertising2025 #firstpartydata #programmaticadvertising #programmatic #publishing #publishingindustry #digitalpublishing #mediapublishing #AIsoftware #AImarketingsoftware #digitalmarketing #digitalmediamanager #digitalmediamanagement #MarketingManager #MagazineManager (Photo Source: MediaVillage)

If you can forgive one more trip down memory lane. This is part of the season one team of “Dragons’ Den” last night - Dianne Buckner Mike Armitage Michael Grippo csc Tracie Tighe and Kevin and Jim. The show - and Shark Tank - are among the last of their kind. A format launched on over the air TV that was able to capture the popular imagination. At its peak it had 3.4 million Canadians a minute watching. Weekly reach might have been triple that - in an English Canadian universe of 25 million or less? It was less than 15 years ago, but a time that will never come again. 289 episodes in (and counting - look at the snazzy new set) it is still the #1 show on CBC for under 50s. Much smaller audiences but still hundreds of thousands of Canadians watch it weekly. Shark Tank just got renewed itself yesterday for next year. “Dans l’oeil du dragon” in Quebec is a monster hit. Lots of reminiscing and tears about a show that changed so many lives - more than 2000 pitches in Canada on the show and millions and millions invested! Michele Romanow said it best - she started watching the show when she was a “nobody” (hardly but I get her point) and it inspired her, as it has millions around the world, to take the entrepreneurial journey. And it’s entrepreneurs who build the future. Great to see the new Dragons, including Brian Scudamore, there to pick up the torch. It’s a truly great Canadian institution. By way of Japan and the BBC. Terrestrial radio is still top dog when it comes to reach. Nielsen recently reported that radio reaches 91% of U.S. adults 18+ each month. While there is certainly growing competition for share of listening - streaming audio, podcasts, etc. - radio stands strong. What should you consider when it comes to radio? I’ve been thinking a lot on the future of law firms and the companies who provide marketing services to them. The legal space is arguably one of the most fragmented industries, with no single law firm capturing more than 1% of the total market. I can only imagine how enticing the opportunity for investment and consolidation looks to Wall Street investors. In the long term, I believe AI will be profoundly disruptive. At the moment, AI is primarily being used as a productivity tool to help law firms write blog posts or handle after-hours calls. While it might be difficult for many to envision (or admit), I think it’s inevitable that AI will eventually displace the vast majority of white collar jobs which require people to spend their time talking and typing (lawyers being just one example). It's not a question of if but when, and I think people underestimate just how advanced and capable AI will become within the next 5–10 years.
