During a recent deep conversation with my close friend and mentor, we delved into the intricacies of Appian and its profound benefits. As a developer, I've always been curious about the extent of growth possible in this field. When I posed this question to my mentor, he shared a perspective that resonated deeply with me. "Brother, to truly excel in this field, you must evolve into a consultant," he said. " You should aim to understand the business better than the business owner. Your role should be to enlighten them on how you can optimize processes and simplify complexities, making their operations more efficient and effective." This advice struck a chord with me. It's not just about writing code; it's about transforming businesses through technology. It's about becoming a trusted advisor who can envision solutions that align with strategic goals and drive tangible results. This shift in mindset, from developer to consultant, signifies a profound evolution in one's career, marking the transition from a technical expert to a strategic partner. The amount of people and events can be overwhelming for an introvert. 😵‍💫🫠 🧚🏽‍♂️Here are some tools and tips to prepare! 1. Plan Ahead: - Research the Agenda: Identify sessions, workshops, and speakers that interest you the most. Prioritize those to make the most of your time. - Set Goals: Decide what you want to achieve—networking, learning about new technologies, or finding job opportunities. Clear goals can provide a sense of direction and purpose. 2. Leverage Technology: - Render App: Use the event’s app to connect with other attendees, plan your schedule, and stay updated on any changes. - Social Media: Follow the conference hashtags and join discussions online. This can be a low-pressure way to engage with others. 3. Strategize Networking: - Quality Over Quantity: Aim for meaningful conversations rather than trying to meet as many people as possible. - Prepare Questions: Have a few questions ready to start conversations. Asking about someone’s work or opinions on a session can be great icebreakers. - Virtual Business and Cards: Add your virtual business card to your apple wallet for quick exchanges using you phone and/or smart watch. 4. Find Quiet Spaces: - Recharge Zones: Locate quiet areas or recharge zones within the conference venue where you can take breaks and re-energize. - Hotel/Room Breaks: If the conference is close to your accommodation, consider taking breaks in your room to relax and decompress. Earlier this year, I had the privelege of moderating a panel of industry execs from ServiceNow, Google, Netflix, Nvidia along with the faculty at Savannah College of Art and Design to understand the implications of AI and its impact on the design industry. The outcome of the panel has just been published by SCAD in the AI insights book which I’d highly recommend giving a read. SCAD has always been at the forefront of disruption and bridging the gap between academia and industy. This was one of a kind summit to bring industry and academia together to think about AI, it’s state in the industry and how we can prepare students better in this changing landscape. https://lnkd.in/gzM9Xf8h

Counter to the demands of the day and the modes of modernity, the corners of bookstores invite slowing, stillness, and seclusion." Half of the message of this post is: if you are fascinated by the world of book creation and distribution, consider reading "The Spaces of Bookselling". To me as an ebook enthusiast, it is a helpful text about the area in which ebook infrastructure currently fails very visibly: creating an atmosphere conductive of discovery. Another half is: keep an eye on the "Elements in Publishing and Book Culture" series by Cambridge University Press. It is an ongoing stream of concise, competent, and invariably helpful studies on a variety of questions. "Space as Language: The Properties of Typographic Space" by Will Hill is among the most recent additions. "Innovations in Digital Comics" by Francesca Benatti is coming soon.

From Stalled Striving to Sweet Satisfaction: My Victory with Completion Perfectionism and completionism, those two sides of the creative coin. I used to be a die-hard perfectionist, endlessly tweaking and refining projects until they felt...well, never quite perfect. It was a recipe for frustration and stagnation. Then, I discovered the power of completionism. The shift wasn't easy, but it was transformative. Here's how embracing completion led me to victory: From Paralyzed to Productive: Perfectionism left me paralyzed, constantly tinkering. Completionism empowered me to finish projects, to finally hit "publish" and share my work with the world. Learning Through Doing: Each completed project became a stepping stone. I learned from successes and failures, constantly refining my skills. Perfectionism kept me stuck in a cycle of "almost there." The Joy of Achievement: Finishing something brings a deep sense of accomplishment. Perfectionism left me perpetually chasing an unattainable ideal, never truly satisfied. This shift from perfectionism to completionism wasn't just a change in approach, it was a win. It allowed me to: Ship projects: My creative output skyrocketed. Develop my skills: Each completed piece became a learning experience. Experience the joy of accomplishment: The satisfaction of finishing something fueled my motivation. Remember, "good enough" is often great! Set achievable goals & celebrate completion. Finished products pave the way for even better creations in the future. If you're in a career where you are concerned that your job will be subsumed by AI, then it's time to learn AI so you can outperform both your peers and AI alone. Learn prompt engineering as it relates to your interests and professions. Learn RLHF to increase your value at your workplace before they even start to think about AI. The basics of both concepts can be understood in an afternoon, and then learning more about them is as easy as chatting with any of the freely available Large Language Models (Meta.AI, Claude.AI, OpenAI's GPT3.5, etc.) You can even do what I did a year ago and set up an AI conversation that is specifically about training you on these things, and it can result in responses like this to help you along the way (Courtesy of Meta's Meta.AI): Understanding RLHF (Reinforced Learning through Human Feedback) RLHF is a powerful technique for fine-tuning large language models like myself. It involves training the model to generate responses that are not only coherent and informative but also aligned with human preferences. Key Challenges Defining the reward function (how you tell the AI it did a good job): Crafting reward functions that accurately capture human preferences is crucial. You'll need to balance multiple objectives, such as fluency, accuracy, and engagement. Handling feedback variability: Human feedback can be noisy and inconsistent. You'll need to develop strategies to handle this variability and ensure the model generalizes well across different feedback styles. Avoiding over-optimization: RLHF can lead to over-optimization, where the model becomes too specialized in generating responses that maximize the reward function (the AI wants the pat on the head more than being right). Be mindful of this and incorporate techniques to promote diversity and exploration. Best Practices Use high-quality training data: Ensure your training data is diverse, relevant, and representative of the tasks and domains you want the model to excel in. Employ techniques for exploration: Regularly introduce new prompts, topics, or feedback styles to encourage the model to explore different response types and avoid over-optimization. Monitor and adjust the reward function: Continuously evaluate the reward function's effectiveness and make adjustments as needed to ensure the model is aligned with human preferences. Leverage human evaluation: Regularly conduct human evaluations to assess the model's performance and provide feedback to the model. Stay up-to-date with advancements: RLHF is an active area of research, so stay informed about new techniques, architectures, and best practices to incorporate into your work. Additional Tips Be mindful of potential biases in the training data and feedback, and take steps to mitigate them. Consider using techniques like inverse reinforcement learning to learn from human behavior and preferences. Don't hesitate to experiment and try new approaches – RLHF is an iterative process!

With these skills mentees improve their employment prospects and reduces recidivism rates. Starting out in tech is like trying to cook jollof rice for the first time —😅you think it’s straightforward until everything starts burning. I remember my early days: 🔹struggling with CSS positioning (float still haunts me), 🔹breaking layouts, 🔹and second-guessing every line of JavaScript. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking back now, here are three things I wish I’d known: 1️⃣ Ask questions shamelessly. The smartest developers I know aren’t afraid to ask “dumb��� questions. 2️⃣ Learn version control early. Git saves more than code—it saves sanity. 3️⃣ Build messy projects.
