- [Instructor] So you've done the hard work to get your data into SPSS, to get it set up, to get the variable labels, the value labels, and you're prepared for analysis. The first place you should start is with the most basic exploratory analyses, so you know what's even there for you to work with. And the simplest analysis of all is frequencies for categorical variables. If you go to SPSS, there are two ways to do this. One is with a dropdown menus. Let's go to analyze and then descriptive statistics. And the first choice is frequencies. And that means counting how often each category of a nominal or ordinal variable occurs. And what we want to do here is pick a few variables that are inherently categorical, and I'll show you some other options as well. But let's start by looking, say for instance, at region.
