Fascinating to watch this *finally* come together after 25 years of discussions around the concept of digital identity! There is real momentum now that mobile phones provide a stable, secure, privacy enhancing platform experience for consumers. Now 9 states plus Puerto Rico offer either a full digital driver's license or a state ID within the Apple Wallet. Many states and some federal agencies are pairing this mDL or digital credential with #facerecognition technology to enable relying parties to build out digital services around the digital identity. Those services will continue to grow but today they include critical functions such as banking, finance, payments, government benefits, age verification, and identity proofing for travel. I wonder, how long will it take for all 50 states and 16 U.S. territories to migrate their driver's licenses and credentials to a digital format?

Soon, the need to scan physical ID documents will be gone and big tech companies are accelerating this. With their native wallets, companies like Apple and Google will inevitably disrupt the physical processes of identity verification. How? 1. People are starting to be allowed to store digital ID documents on their phones wallets. 2. Apps will soon be able to directly verify the data from the phone's wallet they are installed on. With these two things combined, there is no longer a need to scan physical documents. Take mobile driver licenses (mDLs) as an example. They are already legal in 18 states in the US, 9 of which have active mDLs and Apple and Google wallets support them in 4 of these states. So how should identity verification companies react? -> By offering their clients the same digital identity capabilities. By understanding how to verify these new digital ID formats (and potentially issuing them with authorities) ID providers will gain a competitive advantage in this new era of digital ID verification. The implementation of REAL ID requirements has been often delayed, but its enforcement is about to get … REAL. Starting May 7, 2025, every U.S. resident will need to present a REAL ID license (or another acceptable form of identification) in order to board a commercial aircraft. Two other types of identification will be accepted: an Enhanced Driver’s License, available to citizens of Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont; and a Mobile Driver’s License, a digital representation of a state-issued physical driver’s license. The mDL is typically installed through a smartphone app stored in a digital wallet, similar to how you might store a physical credit card on your smartphones. An mDL is issued only by states that are granted a temporary waiver of the REAL ID requirements by the Transportation Security Agency. TSA currently accepts mDLs issued by 11 states at 27 participating airports and has a goal of expanding the technology nationwide and accepting mDLs in all airports. The states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, Ohio and Utah, and that list may grow.
