👏 Very happy to see that two of our lab's recent research articles entered 2023-24's Clarivate Most Highly Cited articles list! Cell Reports by Cell Press Cell Press AAAS 🙏 Particularly proud of these because both of these studies produced #biomarkers and/or #immunotherapy strategies that are currently being translated towards two investigator-driven #clinical #studies at UZ Leuven & Dusseldorf for #immunotherapy or #vaccination in #cancer #patients! 🤞 Hope we can realize our intended impact to improve patient's lives! Bowel Cancer Awareness Month June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month . Bowel cancer claims the lives of 103 Australians every week (5,350 people a year) - but it's one of the most treatable types of cancer when detected early. 299 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer this week (15,531 people a year). While the risk of bowel cancer increases significantly with age, the disease doesn't discriminate, affecting people of all ages. Early detection can save lives. A bowel cancer screening test is recommended every 2 years between ages 45-74 as per our medical guidelines . From 1 July 2024, the eligible screening age for the National Bowel cancer screening programme will be lowered from 50 to 45 to reflect above . March is #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth. #Kidneycancer, also known as #renalcancer or #renalcellcarcinoma (RCC), is one of the 10 most common cancers in adults, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In 2024, ACS estimates over 81,600 cases of kidney cancer will be diagnosed in the United States — with over 64% being in men. Most people are born with two kidneys, but living a high quality of life with only one is possible. The kidneys' primary functions are to remove waste and extra fluid from the body and to help maintain a healthy balance of water, salt and minerals in the blood. Kidney cancer begins when healthy cells in one or both kidneys change and grow out of control. The kidneys serve as essential organs in the urinary system, which makes this cancer a type of #urologiccancer. Chemotherapy is not considered to be one of the more effective treatment options for renal cancer. More and more, immunotherapy and targeted therapy (or combinations) are becoming the primary choice for treatment in patients where the tumor cannot be removed via surgical options or where the cancer has spread to areas other than the kidney. More research — through #clinicaltrials — is being done to better understand which drugs are most effective on the different kidney cancer subtypes. #kidneycancerawareness

Estradiol and progesterone do not give women breast cancer. If they did, breast cancer rates would be highest in reproductive-aged women and menopause would be protective, but the absolute opposite is true. Only 4% of breast cancer diagnoses are in women under 40. This is because your natural hormones and human-identical HRT hormones likely PROTECT you from breast cancer. And women with natural hormones who get breast cancer get cancer despite their hormones, not because of them. Why do people think that hormones cause breast cancer? Reason #1: Early HRT formulations used hormone mimickers, which were the best they had at the time, and these chemicals do increase breast cancer risk. Reason #2: Most breast cancers have estrogen receptors, which means that unfortunately, if a breast cancer forms, estrogen may cause it to grow. This is why women who are at risk for breast cancer need to be screened before starting hormones, and any woman with a hormone receptor (HR) positive breast cancer cannot take hormones. 24 women die from ovarian #cancer every hour, of every day, according to the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition. And this number is expected to rise by over 55% by 2050. Ovarian cancer survival rates are typically lower than other cancers. In developed countries survival rates are 36% - 46% – compared to breast cancer’s survival rate of almost 90%. And those numbers are worse in low- and middle-income countries where 70% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer call home. It’s clear the world has much more to do when it comes to the diagnosis, treatment and care of ovarian cancers. Here are 4 key Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month take aways: 💡 A cervical smear test does not detect ovarian cancer. 💡 Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage. 💡 Diagnosing ovarian cancer before it spreads makes it much more treatable. 💡 Symptom awareness might lead to quicker diagnosis. And here are the 4 main symptoms of ovarian cancer to look out for: 🔴 Persistent stomach pain 🔴 Persistent bloating 🔴 Difficulty eating/feeling full more quickly 🔴 Needing to wee more frequently Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g7v-PKs #OvarianCancerAwarenessMonth #OvarianCancerAwareness #cancer #medEd #LearningDevelopment #CPD

Immunotherapies and combination treatments got a lot of attention at this year’s ESMO Congress, with a focus on bispecifics as having large potential in developing new treatments for cancer. Research presented at the conference, however, showed that manufacturers are still struggling with challenges of efficacy and toxicity. This Wednesday is World Ovarian Cancer Day. The importance of symptom awareness when it comes to Ovarian Cancer cannot be underestimated. There are often no obvious signs of ovarian cancer, (hence it often being diagnosed in its advanced stages) However people may experience one or more of the following symptoms: * abdominal bloating * difficulty eating or feeling full quickly * frequent or urgent urination * back, abdominal or pelvic pain * constipation or diarrhoea * menstrual irregularities * tiredness * indigestion * pain during intercourse * unexplained weight loss or weight gain. These signs and symptoms don’t mean you have ovarian cancer but if they’re new to you and persistent, please, please speak to your doctor!! #ovariancancer #wocd #gynaecologicalcancer Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) Ovarian Cancer Australia World Ovarian Cancer Coalition
