🐄 Greenhouse gas emissions from beef production in the US are a complex issue, spanning the entire supply chain—from crop and livestock production to processing. A recent study has pinpointed 42 practices that could help reduce these emissions by up to 30%, with significant improvements coming from changes made during the grazing stage. 🔑 This research provides evidence that to maximize our impact on reducing emissions in the beef industry, it’s crucial to adopt effective practices across the entire supply chain, even though the best strategies may differ by region. This research emphasizes key areas and methods for investing in emission reductions, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach that is tailored to specific regional contexts. Denmark Introduces World’s First Livestock Emissions Tax to Combat Climate Change Denmark has taken a groundbreaking step in the global fight against climate change by introducing the world’s first tax on agricultural emissions, including methane emissions from livestock. This innovative policy, set to begin in 2030, marks a significant move to address one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Did you know that food systems account for more than a third of all greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity? 🍽 Animal-sourced food production is responsible for an estimated 58% of that total. Cultivated meat can reduce the need for livestock farming, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions, decreasing land and water usage, and mitigating other environmental impacts associated with conventional meat production. It's time we transform our food systems for the better and create a more sustainable future. #sustainability #cultivatedmeat #animalwelfare Paul Bevan Andrew Laslett Jacob Goodwin Wendy Chua Ella Jenkins

Priority areas for investment in more sustainable and climate-resilient livestock systems : A transition is thus needed for livestock systems to become more sustainable and climate resilient, with clear positive effects on the Sustainable Development Goals. It is unclear, however, where the global community should invest to support this change. read more : https://rdcu.be/dPz7W. Bonilla-Cedrez, C., Steward, P., Rosenstock, T.S. et al.

This week, alongside 40+ organizations in the EU Food Policy Coalition, we sent an open letter to the new EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, calling for a just transition for European farming. The EU Commission’s forthcoming Vision for Agriculture and Food must include ambitious climate targets and a plan to transition away from industrial livestock while supporting farmers financially and ensuring nutritious, affordable food for consumers. Additional comment on reduction of enteric methane emissions Thanks everybody for all the reads and comments and reposts! For the avoidance of doubt, I really think that longer-term (10-plus years), we need to have introduced regenerative multi-mix species across our pastoral agriculture. There are plenty of (mainly leguminous) species that contain condensed tannins and other psms that are known to inhibit enteric methane, as well as providing animal health benefits. Many of these species have tap-rooted root systms, providing vital tolerance to drought. But we don't as yet have enough knowledge on them (except maybe on lucerne) regarding how to utilise them and manage their grazing under intensive dairy farming, rolling hill country or hard hill country, and determine their productivity relative to ryegrass/cover mixes. It would take probably 7-10 years to collect this information and pass it on to farmers; my post was focused on seeing what we could achieve in reductions on-farm by 2030, if this is as important to NZ as I think it will be.

We know that Big Meat is borrowing form Big Oil's playbook and Unearthed's latest investigation gives hard evidence of that. It shows how the livestock industry has been circulating disputed science as well as using front groups to lobby against environmental regulation and to block cultivated meat coming to market in Europe. This is incredibly cynical, blocking a potential solution which could help shift diets to reduce emissions. As well as providing a scapegoat to farmers groups instead of a proper discussion about the just transition required to make agriculture more climate and nature friendly. https://lnkd.in/euXDzBTR
