❤️🧠We launched our People's Action Party Mental Health Group today. PM Lawrence Wong has said that mental health is a “national priority”, and our party and our partners are key to our efforts. That’s why PAP Assistant Secretary-General Chan Chun Sing launched the group today with Co-Chairs Janil Puthucheary, Wan Rizal Bin Wan Zakariah and Rachel Ong. Our PAP Mental Health Group will: - promote a deeper understanding of the complexities of mental health issues - assure those facing these challenges that they are not alone - build mental resilience within communities. 👩🏻⚕️We also introduced a panel of eight mental health experts from hospitals, social service organisations and psychological services that will support our efforts. The panel will serve as our “brains trust” with the technical and professional expertise to ensure our decisions are evidence-based. We will also explore ways to improve the accessibility of mental health services and raise awareness of the resources available to the community. 🏃♀️We have a running start. Our PAP MPs have been advocating for more to be done in the mental health space since 2007 and they continue to champion these issues in parliament. And government is listening and adopting their suggestions. 💡 And they have more ideas. Workgroup member and MP Hon Weng Yip is pushing for subsidies for mental health services at polyclinics. Workgroup Co-Chair MP Rachel Ong is advocating for the age of consent for mental health services, such as mental health assessments and basic counselling to be lowered to 18. I’m honoured to serve as advisor to the Workgroup alongside Rahayu Mahzam, Siow Huang Gan and Eric Chua. And to work with WG members like Wu Meng Tan, Melvin Yong, Pei Ling Tin, Mariam Jaafar and Xie Yao Quan. Ping our PAP team if you would like to partner us to strengthen mental health resilience in Singapore, because we’re #bettertogether

This is fantastic news! Mental health is such an important issue and it's great to see the People's Action Party taking a proactive approach to promoting understanding and building resilience within communities. It's also reassuring to know that there is a panel of experts on board to ensure that decisions are evidence-based. I look forward to seeing the progress that the PAP Mental Health Group makes and would love to partner with you to support these efforts. #bettertogether
All my favourite mental health advocates gathered in one place! Looking forward to seeing the kind of impact you'll make together. 💝
Very heartened to see this Alvin Tan ! It’s much needed in these times where mental health is vital to our overall growth as a country. Performance and productivity must not sacrifice wellbeing, because that results in long term repercussions for families and society in general. The costs are great so the earlier we intervene and support, the better. 😊
Fantastic initiative. Mental health is no different from overall health. Many things can be done to work on uplifting the overall energy of mind and body ( both being intrinsically connected ) at a biological, psychological and social level. Would be interested in supporting.
Great initiative Alvin Tan. One small suggestion, if I may - to add the word ‘Advocacy’ and make it the People's Action Party’s Mental Health Advocacy Group. All the best in your endeavours and look forward to opportunities to collaborate in moving the needle in this space.
I hope this initiative pushes the needle, whenever and wherever needed!
I am eager to see how we can help young people develop mental resilience!
Great start, Alvin! My question is how the government will start getting the management team at the Civil Service to learn about mental health. The government must walk the talk. If the civil service are not inclusive nor empathetic, how do you expect that from the private sector?

1moEchoing the importance of prioritizing mental health, it is essential for us to recognize that each of us plays a critical role in promoting mental wellbeing at home, in the workplace, and within our communities. Psychosocial support plays a pivotal role in this effort. It addresses not only the mental, but also the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of individuals. By cultivating a culture of empathy and establishing robust support systems, we empower people to navigate challenges, build resilience, and support one another. This approach strengthens the social fabric of our communities. With the guidance of our esteemed Advisory Panel, including A/Prof Lee Cheng and A/Prof John Wong, the Singapore Red Cross Academy, through its Centre for Psychosocial Support, strives to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to support mental well-being. We advocate the importance of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to help people build resilience, cope with mental health challenges, and promote overall wellbeing. By working together and prioritizing psychosocial support at home, in workplaces, and in communities, we can create a healthier, more supportive environment for everyone.
