The effort required to reset our public services is immense. We can realistically probably only do this one step at a time. In my work developing alternative public services, we always find that the boundaries of our work, there exists a tension with the current ways of working. This tension prevents further development and in most cases causes the ultimate end of the innovative work. Fundamental rethinking is required.

I think this is an excellent idea! The relationship between provinces and cities is akin to that of a parent and child. Many cities have gone beyond their jurisdiction, resulting in the squandering of municipal funds on non-essential matters. To tackle this, municipalities must be reminded of their boundaries and that they must prioritize spending in their authorized areas, fostering accountability for their financial decisions. The instances of municipalities delving into realms like foreign affairs, public health, and social justice, while seeking more funding, are concerning, for example, the proposed rain tax in Toronto. Implementing audits and enforcement measures, akin to parental discipline, can steer them back to focusing on issues within their mandate and curb spending on frivolous ventures. I say, it is high time to put some municipalities into a time-out until they learn to stay within their boundaries and spend responsibly. What do you think?
