What if AI could catch diseases before they spread and save countless lives? Traditional AI methods often fall short, missing out on the deep knowledge that specialists have about how our bodies function on a cellular level. This inspired me to become a part of 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵-𝗥𝗔𝗚: 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲-𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, a project we proudly submitted to 𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗖𝗔𝗜(Medical image computing and computer-assisted intervention, a significant platform in healthcare technology) 2024. We didn’t just improve AI accuracy, we supercharged it. We boosted diagnostic precision from 38% to 47%, with an impressive 28% leap for certain key pathology images. These figures are more than just statistics each one represents faster, more accurate diagnoses means doctors can catch diseases earlier and start treatment sooner, leading to better outcomes for patients. This work is transforming diagnosis using AI to save lives with a real impact on people around the world. Ready to be part of something big? Did you know that Ada Lovelace and Florence Nightingale were not only contemporaries (with only a 5-year date of birth difference) but knew each other and were friends? Florence, and possibly Ada, also met another legend and contemporary of them, Charles Darwin. Just as we did with others before; bringing Charles Darwin, Alexander Fleming, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie and Alan Turing to life with AI in a pedagogical exercise to discuss how history influences the future of medicine and healthcare. This time, we bring young versions of these two remarkable women with great enduring legacies to life with generative AI: Ada Lovelace, possibly the first modern computer programmer, and Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing and statistical analysis, pioneer of infographics. Although initially working on seemingly unrelated fields, the pioneering work of Ada and Florence is converging to reshape healthcare through computational intelligence. We asked their AI-generated avatars about their legacy and how AI is creating the future of precision healthcare and predictive medicine. While AI and algorithms provide powerful tools, Florence Nightingale's emphasis on compassionate care ensures technology serves humanity. This ethos is essential for advancing medicine, preserving values of empathy, dignity, and respect for every patient. At Oxford Immune Algorithmics® (OIA), we are inspired by the legacies of Ada Lovelace and Florence Nightingale. In part, and thanks to the contributions of these two great figures, OIA has been able to develop Algocyte®, a suite of AGI-driven solutions that enable remote digital endpoints in healthcare pathways to understand the dynamics of health and disease. Pryfiber are using #AI to allow clinicians to see what was previously impossible. A Queen Mary #spinout, Pryfiber recently joined the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering’s #MedTech Venture Builder. We spoke with #founder Dr Lei Su: - Why is it so hard for clinicians to see into the smallest places? “Normal endoscopes are simply too big and inflexible. It’s not as easy though as just making the endoscope smaller. We’re developing a micro-endoscope using only a single optical fibre, less than 0.3mm in diameter – but equipment that small can’t capture a visible image, so it’s not much use.” “Our innovation is an AI algorithm which uses deep learning to reorganise the light that travels through the micro-endoscope, recreating accurate and useful images in real time.” - So what new possibilities does this create? “With our AI algorithm reconstructing the image in real time, clinicians can use ultrathin endoscopes to see into the most difficult to reach places – such as joints or blood vessels in the brain.” “This makes it possible for clinicians to capture high-definition images for diagnostics and treatment that have previously been impossible to obtain.” Pryfiber will be raising investment in early 2025 to finalise product development and initiate clinical validation.
