Someone once said, ‘𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝.’ Break free from the 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲—𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧, 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨’𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦. That’s when you 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞." Living by this belief, I was fortunate to be part of the 3𝒓𝒅 𝑬𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒅 & 𝑫𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 2024. The event brought together 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 across sectors like government, cybersecurity, cyber law, IT, defence, data centres, and healthcare. We engaged in enriching discussions on topics such as ‘𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑫𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔’ 𝒂𝒏𝒅 ‘𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒐𝒂𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒂 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆.’ The conversations were deeply insightful, focusing on the latest trends, innovations, best practices, and challenges in the industry.   M͟y͟ ͟T͟h͟o͟u͟g͟h͟t͟s͟ ͟o͟n͟ ͟t͟h͟e͟ ͟F͟u͟t͟u͟r͟e͟ ͟o͟f͟ ͟G͟r͟e͟e͟n͟ ͟D͟a͟t͟a͟ ͟C͟e͟n͟t͟r͟e͟s͟ ͟a͟n͟d͟ ͟T͟h͟e͟i͟r͟ ͟C͟h͟a͟l͟l͟e͟n͟g͟e͟s͟:͟ ◾ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Green data centres should be part of an organization’s overarching strategy, with a dedicated budget identified and secured for implementation. ◾ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐎𝐈 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Initial investments may bring adoption challenges, but allowing time to realize the return on investment is essential. ◾ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬: Gaps in internal talent can be addressed by collaborating with experts to audit infrastructure, recommend alternatives, and craft a detailed setup plan. ◾ 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭: Mindset changes, driven by government policies, are crucial for widespread adoption of green practices. ◾ 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Reducing overuse of digital assets and preventing redundant data storage is critical for a greener future. ◾ 𝐀𝐈 & 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: These technologies can optimize load, minimize idle power usage, and monitor asset utilization, including battery health. ◾ 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬: Clear responsibilities between data centre service providers and enterprises are vital to address redundancy over time. ◾ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐬: Aligning with data localization laws is essential but may pose challenges such as talent shortages or land availability. ◾ 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Employing technologies like liquid cooling and advanced air systems can improve efficiency significantly.
