It’s rare to find someone who has gone through a decade scaling developer workflows in a single company. I sat down with Kent Wills recently discussing the evolution of developer platforms at Yelp and dove into their ownership architecture. Listen to full episode on Substack, Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Youtube: https://lnkd.in/g722icVw Some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Yelp transitioned from a monolithic codebase to a service-oriented architecture that improved code ownership and productivity. 2️⃣ Yelp has internally built most of the tooling circled around ownership to handle tech debt and track vulnerabilities. 3️⃣ Yokyo Drift is an internal tool to support migrations across the organization Pre-commit is an internal tool (now open source) to help standardize the coding practices 4️⃣ AI-powered coding assistance has the potential to further enhance productivity and reduce repetitive work. #developerproductivity #ownership

🌟 Great Read about modularization🌟 I recently came across a fantastic article by 👾 Tjeerd In 't Veen on modularization that I'd highly recommend for anyone dealing with complex codebases. The piece delves into 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧, including handling circular dependencies—something we all encounter at some point. The article not only offers valuable insights with real-world examples but also complements our podcast discussion on the same topic. In my first dev job (fantastic job - 4 person startup!), it was writing code, all day, every day. But when I moved from there to Google and after, as I got more senior I was reading a lot more code. And that was so hard. It was only at Google that I really understanding what a huge codebase means (and all the unexpected challenges that come with that). But it turns out that reading code is super important in any team that has multiple coders -- if for nothing else than the code review process requires reading code. And...understanding the system. Something I really got to understand because of the fast-paced growth at Chainlink. I did an episode of my podcast - EASIER SAID THAN DONE (AND HOW TO DO IT) a few weeks ago, and shared me learnings (including a linkedin survey I did!) that indicates just how much time engineers spending reading code rather than writing it. And why that is such a critical skill. You can find the full episode on Youtube (handle @zubinpratap) and also on Apple and Spotify.
