The current state of AI companies and their power consumption reminds me of the early days of search when Google had a team working exclusively on shortening response times. This work was for the user's benefit, but it also reduced power consumption by using less compute and directing queries to the closest data center. Hopefully we'll start to hear about climate heroes at AI companies that are working towards lightening the power consumption.
For PNW Climate Week, Hansi Singh, PhD participated in a packed panel event on "Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe for the Planet?" at the Georgetown Steam Plant CDA yesterday! The panel discussion covered the intersection of climate and AI: from the power of AI and machine learning in climate intelligence and action, to the perils of AI in driving unsustainable energy use and consumption habits.
