What's your Code? "I live by the Code of the Black Man! The black man is most DANGEROUS..." The Bro Code Show Community Spotlight Special Guest: Leonardo Williams - Mayor of Durham,NC The assumption that black men are inherently dangerous pervades our society, fueling systemic injustices. Microaggressions reinforce this bias, from clutching purses tighter in their presence to unwarranted scrutiny by law enforcement. These prejudices deny black men equal opportunities and perpetuate societal divisions. Confronting and dismantling these structures is crucial for fostering a more equitable society. Despite the pervasive stereotypes and biases, the strength, perseverance, intellect, and creative genius of black men shine through. They navigate through adversity with resilience, often excelling in various fields despite the systemic barriers they face. Their intellect is undeniable, contributing innovative ideas and groundbreaking advancements to countless industries. Their creative genius is evident in art, music, literature, and beyond, enriching the cultural landscape with their unique perspectives. Through their determination and talent, black men continue to defy the limitations imposed upon them, inspiring change and challenging societal norms. This conversation is coming soon... 🔥 A Vision for Equity, Innovation, and Self-Determination 🌍✨ "If I’m not working to create Black wealth, then I’m not doing my job." 💡 These words from Derrick Johnson at AFROTECH 2024 aren't just a statement—they’re a rallying cry for building systems that empower, uplift, and sustain Black communities. 🚀 💭 Reimagining Education and Innovation: “It is being able to be self-determined that our human essence is an exploited second stool for cheap or free labor… and we are able to create more critical thinkers.” Johnson's reflection is a challenge to leave behind outdated systems—stale classrooms and obsolete textbooks—and instead build innovative frameworks that inspire the next generation. 📚🌱 COVID-19 unveiled systemic cracks, and Johnson’s bold critique of traditional approaches—“I could be in a room with elected officials. They’re boring, and they lost, and I ain’t got time for them”—reminds us: Change isn’t polite; it’s unapologetic, disruptive, and action-oriented. 💥 The launch of NAACP Capital—a $200M fund aimed at uplifting startups and fund managers bridging the wealth gap in communities of color. 💰💼 💡 Johnson’s reminder: Protect intellectual property and empower Black entrepreneurs to overcome funding hurdles. 💪🏿 Dominic K. Hawkins, Jay Lundy NAACP lets dicsuss on how we can increase Black homeownership rates and create an actionable strategy for building generational wealth. 💪🏿 Samantha Katz Mike Green Gillian Marcelle, PhD Elizabeth Leiba https://lnkd.in/eAsGjSvd

Da Hood Talks Takeover — Beyond Good Intentions: Bridging the Gap between Black Communities and Research Communities takes place October 24th from 11-1pm at the Taylor Avenue Building (TAB). Da Hood Talks Entertainment is taking over Collaborative Café to host a three-part series about ethical community engagement in research. The first two candid discussions requests that researchers sit back and hear directly from community members about harms caused by academic institutions, which have minimized community expertise and decentered research aims to help. The third event in this series will invite researchers to ask questions about ethical and effective community engagement in research, share challenges in putting community relationship-building principles into action, and collaborate around solutions. Attendees should be prepared to actively listen, examine their own role in distrust created by these systems, and identify ways to move beyond good intentions to build better relationships. If you’re God-fearing or religious you should be fulfilling your purpose! Sadly, many companies leave us feeling drained. Many black professionals of faith find themselves just surviving, or just stacking money. And many are trying to give back to the community… But WHAT IF…your job AND you giving back to the community could be the same thing? 🤯 There really are for-profit companies making a difference in people’s lives, and if you’re purpose-driven, then you’re really missing out if you’re not part of one of them. Here are 7 fields or domains you need to think about joining: ⓵ AI ⓶ Web3 ⓷ EdTech ⓸ Fintech ⓹ AgriTech ⓺ HealthTech ⓻ Sustainability That’s just a taste. The fact is: there’s not enough black people working where it matters! Don’t just let your job fill your bank account… Let it fill the lives & souls of others too! If you think capitalism can be a force for good– type, “force for good!” in the comment section... And I’ll DM you the best game-plan for joining companies in these fields!

THIS IS FROM 'VOTING WHILE BLACK,' AN APPLICATION I WANTED TO BUILD IN NOVEMBER 2023 to make Civic Engagement Fun and have competitions not that different from watching the various groups supporting Kamala Harris today. The Proof-Of-Concept Demo for voice-based voter registration lookup (for NY and NC) is at https://lnkd.in/er_pGtK6 and the concept paper is at https://lnkd.in/eAvnqeH8 This project was submitted for a grant competition to mobilize Black Male voters between ages 30-50 in 6 states, by an organization called the Black Futures Lab. Unfortunately, it was not selected. I could be wrong, but I suspect that none of the winning submissions used technologies like speech recognition and generative AI via a mobile conversational interface or were even vaguely close in their level of sophistication and potential impact as Voting While Black, which had it been selected, could be supporting grassroots civic engagement projects (including candidate fundraising) involving MILLIONS.

We're back for our third design cycle of the program and cannot wait to see what Black Parents are dreaming up! What is the Lab? The Black Parent Innovation Lab is an opportunity for Black parents to experiment, iterate and hone new strategies to help their communities thrive. Over the course of 6 months through in-person and virtual learning spaces, 10 Innovation Fellows will design, test, and iterate on their ideas using a Black Liberatory Design Framework. Fellows are each granted up to $5000 to implement community-based projects. Who is eligible to apply? Eligible applicants are Black parents who are committed to Black liberation based in California. What are you looking for in an applicant? We are looking for folks who are dedicated to solving an issue in their community that they are closely connected to. We want folks to come to the lab filled with curiosity and questions; we aren't interested in perfectly crafted answers. We are inviting folks who have an openness to shift, to learn, to experiment, to grow, and evolve their ideas. No experience? Perfect! We'd love to work with you! ✨At this time, only California residents are eligible to apply. ✨ Deadline to apply is July 19th. https://lnkd.in/gP95R3az
