Thrilled to share that as a co-lead of MasterClass’ Black ERG, Melanin, we've worked on a MasterClass partnership with Black Tech Pipeline, in order to support our organizations' DEI and Recruiting teams' goals of fostering diversity. I'm passionate about Black tech equity. I love sharing my experience as a non-engineer professional, dispelling the misconception that the tech industry is designated only for individuals who can code or who have engineering degrees. Orgs like Black Tech Pipeline help break down barriers in tech, linking Black professionals to companies committed to inclusion. This equitable focus is so relevant and mission-minded as our world becomes entrenched in tech and AI. Black Tech Pipeline increases opportunities for Black talent, opening doors to competitive salaries. We can also make the case for increasing Black talent in tech because studies show that diverse companies perform better, driving innovation, profitability and improved decision-making. So whether you're a Black technologist, engineer, marketer, entrepreneur, innovator, publicist, graphic designer, or sales professional like me, there is a path for you in tech! And it can start at MasterClass! Check out the positions listed here: https://lnkd.in/eu9JegKc #Blackintech #MasterClass #DEI #techequity

When I started out in tech 14 years ago, I didn’t see anyone who looked like me......... 😪 No role relatable models, and definitely moments of feeling out of place. But I knew one thing—I had a mind for it. I didn't struggle with abstract concepts. Server administration, databases, automation, OOP —I soaked it all up. I was taught Java for three weeks, and it just clicked. But I often wonder: what if someone hadn’t put me up to the challenge? Would I have ever known? Fast forward to today, and I’m delighted to see things changing. There are more role models, more visible faces who inspire and lead. And then we have the BTA Awards, which go one step further—identifying and recognising incredible talent within the Black tech community. These awards shine a light on the heroes of today who serve as role models for the next generation. Even better, this year I get to be a judge among other fantastic people I know including Charlene Hunter MBE, Chenelle Ansah, david mcqueen, Dr Rashada Harry, George Imafidon MBE, Mayokun - Mac Alonge, Pamela Aculey and Yvonne Bajela. I’m looking forward to diving into the applications and learning about the skills, achievements, and impact that people from Black heritage are bringing to tech. If you’re Black, in tech, or know someone making strides in this space, let’s shout about it. Because when our community comes together to celebrate and recognise each other, amazing things happen. (Application link in the comments!) And hopefully, someone like me starting out today will feel a bit more included, a bit more inspired, and see a bright path ahead of them. #BTAAwards #BlackTechExcellence #RepresentationMatters #InclusionInTech #TechCommunity

The Untapped Potential of Black Leadership in Tech In an industry celebrated for innovation, the lack of black leadership is more than just a missed opportunity - it's a call to action. Why? Because diversity isn't just about filling quotas. It's about enriching our technology, our products, and our perspectives with the depth and breadth of human experience. Despite the clear benefits, the roadblocks are real: Bias in Hiring: Even with identical resumes, candidates with traditionally black names get fewer callbacks. It's not just disappointing - it's a systemic failure. Lack of Representation: Seeing is believing. The scarcity of black individuals in leadership roles sends a discouraging message to aspiring black tech professionals. Change isn't just possible; it's happening. But it needs to accelerate. Here’s how: Mentorship and Sponsorship: We need more black mentors in tech, guiding the next generation. But mentorship alone isn’t enough. Sponsorship - advocating for real opportunities - is key. Inclusive Policies: Companies must not only recruit but also retain and promote black talent. This requires a culture that genuinely values diversity. Here's the thing - this isn't theoretical. In my career, I've seen firsthand how diverse teams challenge and inspire each other to achieve more. It’s not about tokenism; it’s about unlocking potential. The tech industry prides itself on solving complex problems. Well, here’s a complex problem that’s ripe for a solution. It's about creating an environment where black professionals don't just survive but thrive. Call to Action: Let's invest in policies and practices that recognize and nurture black talent in tech. It’s not just good ethics; it’s good business. Being black in tech shouldn’t be an uphill battle. It should be an opportunity - for everyone involved. Let’s work together to make the tech industry a beacon of diversity, innovation, and inclusivity. Because when we do, we all benefit. #BlackInTech #TechDiversity #LeadershipDiversity

Building a social media tech startup that’s not just powered by Black culture but owned by anyone who appreciates it shouldn’t offend anybody. Because everyone is invited and welcomed to use Fanbase just like we use every other social media platform that is not owned by us. With DEI being stripped from corporations and government practices, folks who made those decisions should actually be encouraging this shift in Black collaboration building our own infrastructure. The message couldn’t be clearer, inclusivity is off the table for the next four years. That’s why now is the time to come together and intentionally build wealth. If the doors are closing, we’ll just build our own house.

The Importance of African American Representation in Tech 👨🏾💻 Technology is the foundation of our modern world, driving innovation, progress, and solutions to complex challenges. Yet, the tech industry continues to face a representation gap when it comes to African American professionals. Representation matters—not just for diversity but for inclusion, equity, and innovation. Studies show that diverse teams perform better, generate more creative ideas, and build solutions that cater to a broader audience. African American representation in tech ensures that the voices, experiences, and perspectives of our community are embedded in the technologies shaping the future. For young Black professionals and students, seeing leaders and innovators who look like them is inspiring. It signals that there is room for them to grow, thrive, and lead in this transformative field. As we advocate for equity, let’s continue to break barriers, uplift one another, and pave the way for the next generation of Black tech leaders. Representation is not just a goal; it’s a necessity. Let’s celebrate our achievements and keep pushing forward. The future of tech is brighter when we all have a seat at the table. #BlackInTech #RepresentationMatters #DiversityInTech #Innovation
