Another huge week for audiobooks on Spotify! We believe that one of the best ways to support our partners and their success is by giving them access to the right tools and data. So today we’re launching Spotify for Authors, our new platform for all authors and publishers.
I spoke to Spotify’s For the Record team about what this platform means for our partners and the industry — you can read that here: https://lnkd.in/dUaaudab
Thanks to my team for working hard on this launch — and lots more to come from us!
Spotify is ramping up its investment in video by enhancing its audiobook offering with video clips, its latest experiment aligning with consumers' growing preference for video content. The platform is also testing author pages and a follow-along visual experience.

Bonnier Books UK and Blackstone Publishing (US) add catalogues to Spotify
With 615 million users globally, Spotify is a platform deserving serious consideration by authors and publishers, although the reach of the Spotify Premium audiobook deal is a fraction of that right now.
Per a press release, Bonnier Books UK CEO Perminder Mann said:
"One of our core values is that every reader matters, and we are always looking for new ways to broaden the reach of our books to introduce new audiences to our authors’ voices and perspectives. Spotify’s Audiobooks in Premium program is another positive step forward for authors and publishers, and we look forward to Bonnier Books UK audiobooks being enjoyed by a new generation of audio listeners.”
Anthony Goff, President at Blackstone Publishing added: “This relationship has been years in the making as I’ve been speaking with the great team at Spotify from their earliest days of entertaining a foray into audiobooks. Blackstone Publishing could not be happier to have them as a new partner as we continually look widen the scope of the market and get listening to books the mass appeal that it has always deserved.”
All indications so far are that Spotify's audiobook offering is expanding the market in the regions where the option is available, but too soon to be definitive about whether publishers and authors are happy with the revenue share.
And bubbling alongside is a developing controversy over music royalties, with some asserting the introduction of audiobooks to the platform is causing music royalties to fall.
But for now, at least, book publishers seem largely content with the results. Let's hope it stays that way.
Spotify Audiobooks – the Big Picture Slowly Emerges.
"60% of listeners are aged 18-34, with screen adaptations boosting engagement – titles like 'Wicked' saw a 1,400% increase in listens after premiere weekend. Book-to-screen momentum is strong, with 66 of the top 100 US audiobooks either adapted or greenlit for the screen."
See Carlo Carrenho's summary of the early Spotify Wrapped data in the linked post, below.
Anticipating Spotify Premium's Impact
Over the coming months, the true scale of Spotify Premium's first year's impact on the audiobook market will become clearer, including the all-important revenue numbers.
The Luddite Fringe
Cover your ears in preparation for the deafening silence from the Luddite Fringe, led by the UK's Society of Authors. The SoA must be fervently hoping everyone has forgotten how, back in October 2023, then SoA CEO Nicola Solomon, while admitting she had absolutely no idea of the details of the Spotify deal, assured us all that the Premium initiative, which she falsely asserted was giving away audiobooks for free, would have a "devastating impact".

Echoing Irrational Industry Concerns
Of course, Solomon was simply echoing the knee-jerk reactions of Count Dohle of PRH, who back in November 2021 explained with the utmost sincerity that, “When it comes to subscription, I am convinced that in the long run it is not good for author income, it is not good for retail.”
https://lnkd.in/dA2H7NYT
Dohle famously continued in the same breath, "Look at these investments this week: big bucks flowing into the United States publishing industry, Storytel and Spotify entering the scene."
The Count's righteous indignation might have rang less hollow if it were not for the fact that, at that very moment, Markus Moneybags was trying to spend more than $2 billion of German money to buy out Simon & Schuster.
Positive Voices Amid Negativity and Hypocrisy
Amid such shameful ignorance, negativity and hypocrisy, let me give a shout-out to Michele C. (Cobb) of the US Audio Publishers Association. Speaking around the same time as Dohle, she said of the Spotify and Storytel 'big bucks' from Sweden that Dohle found so abhorrent: "These companies are going to be coming up with potentially different models—like a credit model, it shakes up the business a bit—but each publisher is going to make their own decision. With changes in technology and consumer interest, we don’t know what we may see in the near future. It’s exciting.”
Excitement for the Future
A safe bet, Michelle, like me, is excitedly awaiting the imminent first full year reportage while Markus Dohle and Nicola Solomon meet up in a dark cellar somewhere to commiserate with one another.

In the pre-production phase of audiobook creation, the print version is completely altered from the draft manuscript and involves several key format steps to ensure the audio dialogue is optimised for the voice-over talent #Audiobooks 🎧
Spotify is being really aggressive in trying to offer content to its customers. Now that they are making audiobooks widely available, they are giving authors and publishers even more freedom to create. In addition to the cinematic audiobooks that Audible and others (including us) are creating--multicast narration, music, sound effects--producers are now being given the capability of adding "video clips, author pages, and the ability to add visuals that appear while users listen." It will be amazing to see what producers can do with all the space they are creating for us. Will they add illustrations, images of places or characters, tie audiobooks to tv and movies tie-in's? Spotify is testing with premium listeners in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Canada, France, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. It's a brave new world for creators! So exciting!
