WHY in our current systems do we collectively create results that nobody wants??? To answer this puzzling question, Otto Scharmer’s theory-u brings together action science, consciousness and civic engagement to initiate a positive transformation of leaders. For me, this approach has been a major insight and eye-opener. It takes into account a blind spot: "the success of an intervention depends on the interior condition of the intervener." (Bill O'Brien) = the success of what I do as a change maker depends on the inner place from where I operate. In our western societies, we experience 3 major disconnections: 😞 Ecological Divide between self and Nature, leading to climate disruption and biodiversity collapse 😞 Social Divide between self and Other, leading to polarization, increase in inequalities and violence 😞 Spiritual Divide between self and Self (=my highest future possibility), leading to mental issues, depression, even suicides. A photo is worth a thousand words and this one captures the two response cycles we have when faced with challenges of disruption. “When challenges of disruption come, if we have not built the capacity to open our mind, open our hearts, and open our will, then life and our larger systems, will throw us into this other space, the patterns of destruction that we do not want”. This tendency is currently amplified by many forces among them populist parties, social media or trolls. The theory-u provides leaders with a method to cultivate the soil of the social field, i.e. the qualities of the relationships we have to each other, to the system and to ourselves.
