“It stands to reason that someone should be able to file a complaint to say that an organization should have their nonprofit status cancelled because they are aiding and abetting war crimes under the War Crimes Act,” said DAWN's Sarah Leah Whitson. Memorial Day and the Poppy: Have you seen red poppies on Memorial Day and wondered why? The famous red poppy finds its origins on the battlefields of World War I. After the conflict, this unassuming flower became a symbol of remembrance and respect for those who bravely served their country. The association between the red poppy and Memorial Day can be attributed to the poem "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. He was moved by the sight of poppies blooming among the graves of fallen soldiers, forever linking the red poppy with the reverence of Memorial Day. Beyond its symbolism of remembrance and honor, the red poppy also underscores the importance of consumer protection, particularly in the realm of charitable giving. Organizations selling poppies or soliciting donations, it's crucial to exercise caution and ensure that our contributions truly support veterans and their families. Tips for Responsible Giving: 1. Research: Before making a donation or purchasing poppies, research the organization behind the fundraising effort. One way to do this is by checking reputable websites to verify the organization's reputation and track record, here are some examples: -Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance: https://give.org/ -Charity Navigator: https://lnkd.in/dVpiCm4 -GuideStar: https://www.guidestar.org/ 2. Ask Questions: Want to know about how donations will be utilized and the specific programs or services they support, it’s ok to ask questions. 3. Donate Directly: Consider donating directly to well-established veterans' organizations or programs that offer direct assistance to veterans and their families. #MemorialDay #ConsumerProtection #RedPoppy #SupportOurHeroes #IdahoAttorneyGeneral

For many of us, threats to democracy and human rights feel more acute and closer to home than ever before. And yet, shrinking civic space and attacks on fundamental freedoms are global trends that human rights defenders, advocates, public servants, and concerned citizens have long warned about. From pro-democracy student activists arrested in Thailand to climate experts detained in recent-COP-host Azerbaijan; from activists jailed for their religious beliefs in Nigeria to indigenous HRDs criminalized in Mexico; from humanitarian workers in Israel to bloggers in Belarus falsely accused as security threats... These are just a few examples of the cases Freedom Now takes on to help individuals enduring the real consequences of these trends. We use our advocacy to shed light on these situations and help stakeholders understand how they can help. And we work directly with communities, like the brave women of Afghanistan, to help build their resilience and capacity in the face of unspeakable repression. On this #GivingTuesday, please consider supporting Freedom Now to help us continue our work. You can do so by donating here: https://lnkd.in/dnpj3y_Z. Thank you!

Coming soon! Veterans Day donation matching Stand-To Match Day **Next Monday, November 11, 2024** Stand-To Match Day provides an opportunity for growth for participating organizations that strive to do good works and an opportunity for the community to support these causes. On this day, donations made through the Armed Forces Community Foundation to participating funds will receive a 50% match that can be used for their most crucial needs. The Patterson Family Foundation will award up to $70,000 to AFCF for dollar per dollar raised during match days, with up to $35,000 saved for upcoming community enrichment project opportunities and up to $35,000 for participating organizations. Fundraising goal: War Horses for Veterans is seeking $20,000 in funds to assist us in building a new barn. Our current barn was built in the late 1800’s and has been updated however, lacks the room, storage of equipment, and feeding supplies to meet our current needs. With the growth over the last several years, our addition of more horses and equipment has been steady with the demand of our programs. Currently, we have been using temporary housing in the lower level of our property to house horses. This structure is exposed to the elements all year with open portions of each stall for air flow. The temporary stalls are not ideal, which has caused us not to use all the stalls available due to the deterioration of the structure. Let’s help close the gap and get this dude squared!
CALL TO ARMS!!! We got a formerly homeless and addicted Army vet that we helped get housed and navigate the Veterans Court program in Memphis, who graduated last year and is still sober and working. His truck was stolen and he’s late on rent (he lives in a house outside our ecosystem), still sober but unable to make ends meet due to loss of his work truck. He’s got a $300 shortfall on making rent, and needs $3k-ish to replace the vehicle. FlandersFields.org/donate will commit all funds raised to his cause until the needs are met. Who can help? Gonna take us all, that means YOU!
