It was a pleasure to be a part of the Fireside Chat panel at Northwestern Kellogg’s Women’s Director Development Program, alongside fellow Extraordinary Women on Boards (EWOB) members Lisa M. Shalett, Kelly Cornelis, Georgia Nelson, Jan Fields, Christina Rashid, Angela Michael, and Courtney Shea. Led by Victoria Husted Medvec, the panel discussion offered an engaging and thought-provoking space for aspiring and current directors. Our discussion centered on the critical insights we wish we had known and the questions we wished we had asked before accepting a board seat. Among the advice shared: ★ Trust your instincts If something feels off about the dynamics or the questions you’re being asked, don’t ignore it. Your inner radar is rarely wrong when something feels off. ★ Understand the commitment Board service extends beyond meetings. It involves preparation, relationship building, industry and general continuous learning, site visits, etc. Be clear on the time and energy required. ★ Seek tough feedback early Mock interviews with someone unafraid to challenge you can unlock valuable growth. ★ Ask critical questions during diligence For example, understand the financial health of the company and inquire about potential scrutiny, such as adverse recommendations from proxy advisory firms like ISS or Glass Lewis. Clarity on these matters ensures you fully understand what you’re stepping into. The engagement and thoughtful questions from the participants showed how vital programs like this are for equipping board leaders to make an impact. Projects often fail due to a lack of political acumen and the inability to build necessary alliances. Being a good board member involves much more than professional expertise. It's about being a visionary team player, fostering cooperation, communicating effectively, and navigating organizational politics with finesse.
