On this day, we are reminded not just of the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, but of the ongoing work we must do to contribute to healing and reconciliation. It's a day of reflection, but more importantly, a time for all of us to act with intention and commit to lasting change.
As we honour the resilience of Indigenous communities and reflect on the impact of colonialism, here are a few actions everyone can take to foster reconciliation:
1. Listen and Learn: Take time to engage with Indigenous voices. Whether through podcasts or books such as 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act; educate yourself on the realities faced by Indigenous communities: https://lnkd.in/ggpZEApW
2. Support Legal Advocacy: Donate to Indigenous-led organizations like the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society, which advocates for the rights and well-being of First Nations children: https://lnkd.in/g85HJjD
3. Protect Indigenous Lands: Join movements like Land Back, which seek to restore Indigenous stewardship over their traditional territories. You can directly support organizations advocating for land reclamation and ecological protection: https://landback.org/
4. Amplify Indigenous Talent: Follow and share the work of Indigenous artists, writers, and creators. Platforms like Indigenous Cinema bring visibility to these talents, offering opportunities for deeper cultural appreciation: https://lnkd.in/g2D5zXSe
5. Volunteer Your Time: Offer your skills to Indigenous-led initiatives that work to improve education, health care, and infrastructure in underrepresented communities. Look for grassroots movements that align with your abilities and interests.
At the Women’s Economic Council, we are making a deeper commitment too. This year, we’ll be dedicating time to explore how we can actively support Indigenous leadership in the fields we work in.
Insight and solutions that shift the dial 🌟
Last month we got together with new elected members and our partners in the House of Commons to launch the first report of our "Commission into Breaking Down Barriers to Employment" with The Purpose Coalition.
We heard from our front line about experiences in vulnerable households and what's working to tackle poverty, especially child poverty, through better employability provision.
In the UK, employability is such a critical piece of the puzzle, yet current strategies often fall into the same patterns as before. While it’s great to see this issue on the political agenda, we need to focus on what actually works to address the root causes, not just the symptoms.
At the Wise Group, we’ve always championed a more holistic approach, one that doesn’t just stop at financial aid but looks at the full spectrum of support that individuals and families need to move out of poverty. From what we’ve seen on the ground, initiatives like Relational Mentoring can lead to real, measurable outcomes. The key is making sure that resources are used smarter, not just increased, and that we cut through the red tape to focus on real impact.
A huge thank you to Rt Hon. Justine Greening, Lord Walney, all the elected representatives and partners who joined us and contributed to this vital conversation. The way forward isn’t about spending more - it’s about using what we have in ways that really make a difference. Lots more to do! This week, we released our newest report: A Roadmap on Building Towards Anti-Racist Governments.
The Roadmap on Building Towards Anti-Racist Governments is the result of a two-year policy research project. This framework identifies actionable steps for governments to combat systemic racism and advance racial and health equity.
The Roadmap presents a strategic framework for governments to address systemic racism and advance racial equity, drawing from the experiences of three California county governments. Recognizing racism as a chronic, perpetual public health crisis, the roadmap offers concrete lessons and action steps for government practitioners to focus on shifting power, center Black, Indigenous, Immigrant and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, and promote anti-racist policies and practices.
