It feels like another day when I walked into a room with seven other folks to talk about this special project. We sat there looking at each other for several minutes. We were from very different parts of the company, tasked with building something that did not exist in the industry. No material existed in the Financial Services industry on it. You could not read about it, discuss it, question it, or form an opinion on it. What followed were several animated, fiery conflicts—yet we somehow, gracefully and graciously, came up with a solution over several days! Tokenization at Visa was finally launched in 2014 with Apple Pay, the platform that brought forth Digital Payments. Rapidly building the Visa Token Platform—one use case, one market, one client—has been a masterclass in grit, determination, rejection, resilience, and immense collaboration among the collective geniuses of people. As Token at Visa reaches 10B across 200 markets, generating $40 billion in incremental e-commerce globally, I feel immense pride. But more than that, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to have worked with some of the brilliant minds in that space and to build a product of consequence. Today, even in my small hometown in India, a vendor at a makeshift shop can accept digital payments. Payments happen as they should—from the phone, with a text, sometimes a QR, sometimes an OTP. Hot Sale is the biggest digital commerce event in Mexico, bringing in millions of dollars in online sales and attracting consumers with special payment conditions. This year, it happened in May and some EBANX merchants reached an average increase in daily sales volume of over 80% compared to the other days of the month. Last week, we gathered part of our APAC team and merchants in Bangkok 🇹🇭 for our Payments Summit. We discussed the latest trends of Cross Border payments in rising markets, such as Pix Automático use cases, the new regulatory framework in India, the evolution of consumption power in Egypt, Nigeria's next huge payment player, and many other topics. I had the chance to talk about where and what Gaming companies should focus to succeed in rising markets, and here are some of the highlights: 🌎 The power of the "non-obvious markets": when it comes to geographic expansion, merchants usually think about Brazil and Mexico, which combined represent a USD 5B opportunity (what's huge!), but usually neglect Colombia, Peru and the "smaller" markets (Central America, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay), which combined represent a USD 7.8B opportunity! 💳 Ensure you are using all the capabilities of a payment method: enabling cards in Brazil and not enabling installments is almost like driving a sports car with the speed limiter always on - you are just not getting the full potential. Quick real-life example: one of our merchants decided to enable installments in Brazil, and they saw their AOV grow 126%. Simple as that. 🪪 Optimize your checkout: you should always aim for scalable rollouts, but a "one size fits all" checkout will just get you to the average conversion. One of our merchants used to have 10 different fields to generate a PIX payment. We managed to reduce it to 4, and they saw their conversion rate grow by 14 percentual points. Brazil's instant payment system Pix is a worldwide phenomenon, and we all know it. Now, it is set to surpass credit cards as the most widely used payment method in Brazilian digital commerce by 2025. According to exclusive data from EBANX by PCMI, Pix will account for 44% of all value transacted in online purchases in the next year. The growth of Pix on digital, which already accounts for 14% of all instant transactions worldwide, has been driven mainly by retail and travel, the two largest digital verticals in Brazil. As Sebastian Fantini, Product Director at EBANX, explains, Pix has been serving as a gateway to digital commerce: EBANX internal data shows that 95% of people who made their first purchase at one of its partner's online stores paid with Pix. We were tasked with defining and creating the MVP and developing a robust, future-proof solution for the architecture and integration with pertinent services for the ecosystem, working with their business professionals. This involves comparing headless e-commerce market options to ensure the best fit for the established goals.
